Race To Witch Mountain (2009) – Review

Where to watch Race To Witch Mountain

Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson’s second film in a row under the Disney banner is an uninvolving bore. Admittedly I’m not the target audience for the picture. However I have been a fan of Johnson’s films, including his third foray into family friendly territory 2010’s ‘The Tooth Fairy’. Unlike that film Johnson isn’t given a chance here to display his first rate comic timing, multiple appearances on ‘SNL’ have proven this guy is a clown in a gladiator’s body. The plot centers on a Las Vegas cabbie (Johnson) compelled to protect two aliens, in the form of children, from an outer space assassin. I never saw the original. Yet I’m fairly confident that picture didn’t end with an extended fight sequence, between man and alien. In doing so it (intentionally?) brings to mind the infamous face-off in ‘Predator’. Although Schwarzenegger’s classic line “Your one ugly M.F.!” isn’t matched here by Johnson’s “You should have kept the mask on!”. A total waste of time, for The Rock and audiences.

  1. I was a huge fan of the original “Escape to Witch Mountain” and “Return to Witch Mountain”. This version tried to update it for a modern audience but failed. I agree with you that The Rock was bad in this, but was he really better in the Tooth Fairy??
