The Losers (2010) – Review

Based on the graphic novel of the same name, The Losers is a high energy mess that sometimes hits it’s target but mostly misses the mark. After a promising opening act that starts in the Bolivian jungle and ends with a double cross, involving an exploding helicopter and dead children. The film settles into a very familiar plot about a team of guys, who don’t like each other but are forced to work together, in the hopes of bringing down the man who set them up. That man in this case is Max, played by Jason Patric at such a pitched level it’s (intentionally?) pure camp. Despite the presence of the beautiful Zoe Saldana, her romance with team leader Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan ) is flat. There is absolutely no chemistry between the two and it makes the sex scene seem arbitrary and unconvincing. Director Sylvain White brings a stylized look to the proceedings but in the end everything that is happening is so far removed from reality that it’s hard to care. This film plays like a mash-up of ‘Smoking Aces’ and ’3000 miles to Graceland’, I wasn’t a fan of those films either.
