Paranormal Activity 2 (2010) – Review

The follow up to the sleeper hit of 2009 is an adequate successor. Full of tense moments and a few ‘gotcha’ sequences that managed to give this reviewer the goose bumps. This time the story follows the life of a suburban couple, their teenage daughter and infant son. After finding their home ransacked the couple decides to install security cameras throughout their house. The concept is clever and its execution is done with skill. However the novelty is wearing thin, too many times the editing falls into a familiar pattern of showing you the pool, front door, kitchen, then nursery. Large amounts of screen time are spent on very mundane images. The filmmakers carefully and somewhat awkwardly tie this film into the original storyline of Katie and Micah, the couple from the first outing. In doing so it leaves room for further sequels and prequels, although I don’t think this material is compelling enough to warrant a trilogy. But it is a lot better than ‘Blair Witch 2′.
