Get Hard (2015) – Review

Where to watch Get Hard

1 1/2 Stars

Get Hard is an embarrassingly bad, misguided, offensive and somewhat depressing movie that is supposedly a comedy. Farrell has to kiss a dick, hilarious? Not, so much. This material may have been better served in the hands of Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd back in their Trading Places hey-day. In today’s world, it’s old-hat, the jokes are forced and the leads aren’t particularly funny, they flounder on-screen under Etan Cohen’s unfocused direction.

A wealthy, naive hedge-fund manager James (Will Ferrell) is unjustly convicted of fraud and sentenced to Maximum Security Prison, he has one-month to prepare himself for the harsh realities of doing time. Realizing that he needs to toughen up and learn prison survival skills, James seeks out the only black man he knows, Darnell (Kevin Hart) for advice and training. The problem is Darnell is an upstanding citizen who has never spent time in the joint. As Darnell coaches James to ‘get hard’, both learn they are more alike than previously thought.

Will Farrell went all out in promoting the film’s release. Teaming with MLB, Farrell joined nine teams, playing one inning in every position during the course of a day during pre-season ball. That publicity stunt, which was also a charity fundraiser, was far more entertaining than anything in Get Hard. One of the years’ worst films.

Director: Etan Cohen
