John McClane Jr in ‘Die Hard 5′ Will be Jai Courtney
February 22, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News
After such an exhausting search for what seemed to be just the right person to play John McClane’s son in A Good Day to Die Hard 20th Century Fox has settled on Spartacus star Jai Courtney. Strangely Fox has decided to release this on Valentines Day 2013 instead of giving it a summer release, although with how strong Safe House just played this could end up being a huge payoff. I’m not so sure it mattered who they picked for this role, as everyone in the line-up looked incredibly similar (honestly is Jai Courtney’s real last name Hemsworth?). Recently Courtney was cast opposite Tom Cruise in the Lee Child’s adaptation One Shot, so this guy is sort of being groomed for action stardom. We haven’t seen many newcomers hold their ground with audiences though (Sam Worthington comes to mind) and I don’t see anything special about this guy that would change that. Check out the screen test photo of Jai Courtney with Bruce Willis below (I don’t see a strong family resemblance, but whatever) and let us know what you think.

After Lionsgate acquired Summit we all expected this. Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2‘s trailer will be featured on every single print of The Hunger Games. It’s a no brainer to try and syphon off some of the Twilight fans for Hunger Games, after all both are based on a series of books for young adults geared mainly toward the female persuasion (and yes, I’ve read The Hunger Games, and no, I haven’t read Twilight). Anchoring specific big movie trailers to a movie you’re trying to launch has been a big crowd draw in the past. Recently we saw this with the Dark Knight Rises prologue featured on true IMAX prints of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocal. The Star Wars trailers we’re also big draws helping to boost the box office for films they debuted on.
Harker has been looking for a lead for awhile. The new twist on Bram Stoker’s tale brings the venerable master of vampires to England, where Jonathan Harker leads a hunt for the monster on behalf of Scotland Yard. Leonardo DiCaprio is producing, which is probably why Crowe is eyeing the part as the two worked together in 2008′s Body of Lies.

Worried that Arnold Schwarzenegger appearing in Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables 2 won’t be enough machismo for ya? Worry not action fans, it’s been confirmed that both will be teaming up for the Summit Entertainment prison escape flick The Tomb. I can’t begin to gush about this project, especially for these two. Here’s a little run down of the plot and their characters.
Looks like Vin Diesel hasn’t gotten enough of sharing the screen with pro wrestling’s biggest stars. Last summer Diesel faced off against Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in
Apparently Fox isn’t upset with getting stuck with the bill on the last outing with Wolverine, as the newest film has been set to release on July 26, 2013. The film has continually been delayed, with Darren Aronofsky (strange choice to begin with in my opinion) leaving and James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Knight and Day) stepping in to helm the Hugh Jackman (ya he’s back) starrer.

Robert Rodriguez’s Grind-house stint just got longer as he has announced that we will be getting the second installment of the planned trilogy off the ground sometime this year. Rodriguez is partnering with producer Alexander Rodnyansky to deliver a sequel titled Machete Kills. Despite Machete grossing a paltry $26 million at the domestic box-office, fan interest and solid DVD/Blu-Ray sales have been enough to further the exploits of the ‘baddest Mexican on the planet’. Presumably Danny Trejo will return as Machete. Rodriguez had this to say about the project…
It was revealed today that Disney scribe Matt Lieberman will start penning the reboot of Short Circuit. As was previously rumored director Tim Hill (Hop) will be the guiding force behind the camera. For those 1980′s film freaks eager to see Johnny 5 back on the big screen you may be disappointed to hear the producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein are going in a more family friendly direction. The orignal Short Circuit grossed $40,697,761 back in 1986.
After Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Underworld have shown surprisingly hefty IMAX grosses studios are eager to exploit the format (and higher ticket prices) on their own films. Audiences burnt out on 3D have seemingly turned to the large screen presentation as an alternative to the in your face distractions that seem to burden films today. Lionsgate studios has announced a limited one week engagement for The Hunger Games at IMAX locations across the country. The film opens March 23 2012. Studio head Joe Drake had this to say about the news.

Although there is no Mars involved in the remake, it sounds like exactly the same movie. I think I’d actually preferred it if they had copied the Mars subplot anyhow, keeping the film set on Earth might make it seem quite a bit smaller in scope. Then again Colin Farrell is quite a but smaller in scope than Arnold Schwarzenegger, so there ya go. While I’m still not sold on Farrell, I am really liking the secondary cast here, Kate Beckinsale, Bryan Cranston, Jessica Biel, and Bill Nighy. I’m also a big fan of Len Wiseman, which after our Die Hard marathon we kicked 2011 off with, I’ve come to notice his directorial style resembles another favorite director of mine, John McTiernan. Regardless I’m a science fiction fan and will see this movie, for better or worse. Read the official synopsis below and let us know what you think.

Lionsgate has officially announced that Summit Entertainment has given in to them and sold for a mere $412.5 million, which is about $300 million shy of what was being reported earlier ($700 million). I’m still not sold in these being a good idea. Sure it gives Lionsgate a few good franchises, namely Twilight and Red (let’s not forget Step Up!), but it does take out one more small studio, and it can be assured than Lionsgate won’t pick up the slack in the marketplace that Summit’s exit will leave. By that I mean there will be less movies put out by the two combined companies than if they still stood apart as competition. This is bad for anyone that likes more low-budgeted indie fare. That being said, at this price it’s probably going to work out in Lionsgate’s favor. We’ll just have to wait and see. It’s interesting how Lionsgate is trying to spin it in their press release (read below), but I’m sure that “bringing together Summit’s Twilight Saga film franchise and Lionsgate’s highly anticipated Hunger Games franchise” won’t make any difference for audiences (unless they plan some sort of mash-up, I would watch Katniss Everdeen taking out the Twilight vamps with her bow and arrow any day). Especially considering Twilight is over after one more movie, unless God forbid they are planning a TV show (crap, I shouldn’t have put that out into the universe). My first suggestion would be to replace Lionsgate’s marketing department with Summit’s, Lionsgate’s trailers and the graphics used in them are horrendous. I do wonder if they continue using the Summit name or not. Check out the press release below and let us know what you think.
