John McClane Jr in ‘Die Hard 5′ Will be Jai Courtney

February 22, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News

submit to reddit

After such an exhausting search for what seemed to be just the right person to play John McClane’s son in A Good Day to Die Hard 20th Century Fox has settled on Spartacus star Jai Courtney. Strangely Fox has decided to release this on Valentines Day 2013 instead of giving it a summer release, although with how strong Safe House just played this could end up being a huge payoff. I’m not so sure it mattered who they picked for this role, as everyone in the line-up looked incredibly similar (honestly is Jai Courtney’s real last name Hemsworth?). Recently Courtney was cast opposite Tom Cruise in the Lee Child’s adaptation One Shot, so this guy is sort of being groomed for action stardom. We haven’t seen many newcomers hold their ground with audiences though (Sam Worthington comes to mind) and I don’t see anything special about this guy that would change that. Check out the screen test photo of Jai Courtney with Bruce Willis below (I don’t see a strong family resemblance, but whatever) and let us know what you think.

‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2′ Trailer Debuts With ‘Hunger Games’, Studio Hints for New Book

February 10, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News

submit to reddit

After Lionsgate acquired Summit we all expected this. Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2‘s trailer will be featured on every single print of The Hunger Games. It’s a no brainer to try and syphon off some of the Twilight fans for Hunger Games, after all both are based on a series of books for young adults geared mainly toward the female persuasion (and yes, I’ve read The Hunger Games, and no, I haven’t read Twilight). Anchoring specific big movie trailers to a movie you’re trying to launch has been a big crowd draw in the past. Recently we saw this with the Dark Knight Rises prologue featured on true IMAX prints of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocal. The Star Wars trailers we’re also big draws helping to boost the box office for films they debuted on.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer had this to say to investors on a Q3 conference call this morning:

“We’re very excited about the opportunities created by our recent acquisition of Summit Entertainment. The February 11 home entertainment release of Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn 1, the March 23 theatrical release of The Hunger Games and the November 16 theatrical release of Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn 2 lead a strong combined slate that we believe will enable us to deliver increased consistency, profitability and value to our shareholders.”

They went on to say that if Stephenie Meyer wanted to write more Twilight books they would support her fully (hint hint). Seeing as the franchise is at $2.5 billion worldwide with another film yet to open (it’ll end over $3 billion easy) it’s no wonder Lionsgate has been eager to find a way to keep the phenomenon alive.

Will you go see The Hunger Games based off this news? Or does it make a difference to you at all?

Russell Crowe Wants to Hunt Dracula in ‘Harker’

February 10, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News

submit to reddit

Harker has been looking for a lead for awhile. The new twist on Bram Stoker’s tale brings the venerable master of vampires to England, where Jonathan Harker leads a hunt for the monster on behalf of Scotland Yard. Leonardo DiCaprio is producing, which is probably why Crowe is eyeing the part as the two worked together in 2008′s Body of Lies.

With a series of missteps in the past four years, Crowe’s star power has been drained significantly as five out of seven of his films since 2007 raked in around $50 million or below. The other two barely made it over the $100 million hump. He’s definitely trying to turn it around though with a heavy slate of films – the RZA’s directorial debut Man with the Iron Fists, the Mark Wahlberg starrer Broken City, the new superman flick Man of Steel, the hit broadway to film adaption Les Misérables and a possible stint as Noah in Darren Aronofsky’s (wait for it…) Noah. Some may be breakout hits, but most aren’t leading roles.

We’ve seen Academy Award winners fall in the past, and Crowe is no exception to the rule. An actor is never as good as his past work, only his current slate. Unless you’re Nicolas Cage, that bubble seems pretty indestructible.

Han Shot First – ‘Oh No He Didn’t!’ Says George Lucas

February 9, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News

submit to reddit

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter George Lucas stated that Han Solo never shot first. It was simple confusion with the way that scene was edited – all in close ups – when they pull their triggers. In the newer versions of Episode IV he claims all he did was move out to a wide shot. You’ll have to ultimately judge for yourself, but after reviewing both the old version and new version of the scene, I’m kind of inclined to believe ol’ George, although the dialogue kind of pushes it the other way. These so called happy accidents happen in movies all the time. With so much going on something meant to be one way may turn out to be another, or easily perceived to be different than what the filmmaker had originally intended, as was the case here.

Well, it’s not a religious event. I hate to tell people that. It’s a movie, just a movie. The controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo [who seemed to be the one who shot first in the original] to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isn’t. It had been done in all close-ups and it was confusing about who did what to whom. I put a little wider shot in there that made it clear that Greedo is the one who shot first, but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down.

It’s the same thing with Yoda. We tried to do Yoda in CGI in Episode I, but we just couldn’t get it done in time. We couldn’t get the technology to work, so we had to use the puppet, but the puppet really wasn’t as good as the CGI. So when we did the reissue, we had to put the CGI back in, which was what it was meant to be.

If you look at Blade Runner, it’s been cut sixteen ways from Sunday and there are all kinds of different versions of it. Star Wars, there’s basically one version — it just keeps getting improved a little bit as we move forward. … All art is technology and it improves every year. Whether it’s on the stage or in music or in painting, there are technological answers that happen, and because movies are so technological, the advances become more obvious.

Now the Blade Runner bit does little to support his side of this. Those Blade Runner cuts are all different, and some change the film in dramatic ways – this is true even with the smallest of changes to a film. The real question here is who is in charge of the meaning of a film? Is it the filmmaker or is there a general consensus of audience members that define what something means? If a filmmaker is trying to say something, but the audience hears something else (and likes what they hear, a lot), does said filmmaker have the right to go back and clarify his voice in an unmistakable way? Is it even a good idea to touch something people already love? This could be argued about until we’re all dead. My point in all this is, all those versions of Blade Runner are available for my viewing in a nice neat box set. If I go down to the store and buy Star Wars, which versions will I come home with?

Newer (George Lucas clarified version):

Here’s a fan cut with Han clearly shooting first (I actually like this cut the best):

‘Bridesmaids’ Sets VOD Record With 4.8 Million Orders

I would have thought people had their fill of Bridesmaids after a staggering domestic box office run last summer, second only to The Hangover II in terms of tickets sold. Audiences can’t seem to get enough of Kristen Wiig and company’s antics. I’m sure the great word of mouth and awards attention was a major factor in this breaking the record for most ordered video on demand title of all time. Bridesmaids has been viewed a whopping 4.8 million times since it first hit home entertainment distributors last september. The sales have netted nearly $40 million dollars, along with an estimated $100 million taken in on DVD/Blu-Ray sales. Looking at these numbers it’s no wonder Universal is pushing for the sequel.

Independence Day (1996)

Box Office Gross: $306,169,268     Adjusted: $551,381,759

Looking back on the mid-1990s its easy to forget how much a phenomenon ID4 (as it was dubbed in press materials) turned out to be. It spawned a wave of Roland Emmerich directed blockbusters like Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012. It also confirmed the undeniably charismatic Smith was a big screen star and not just a Television actor. Durning the summer of 1996 this was he movie to see, it outgrossed heavy-hitters with established star in Mission Impossible, Eraser, and Twister. Time and the home video format haven’t been kind to this one. The Special effects hold up reasonably well but the cardboard characters and rudimentary storyline are huge detriments. Undoubtedly this film played much better in the theatrical experience. I saw it four times during that summer 16 years ago and I remember thinking ,”ID4 is so good the next Star Wars movies are going to be awesome!”. If only I knew what horrors and disappointment awaited me.

New Behind the Scenes Pics of Will Smith and Son Jaden Smith in M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘After Earth’

February 8, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News

submit to reddit

M. Night Shyamalan and Will Smith have recently posted a few behind the scenes photos of their new collaboration, After Earth, on both Twitter and Facebook. The film also stars Smith’s son Jaden. The jungle location looks beautiful, but kind of strange for a post-apocalyptic film. The movie is kind of a reverse Lost in Space in which a family crash lands on Earth 1,000 years after humans have abandoned the planet. Apparently this is no WALL·E version of Earth though, wonder if the reason for humanity fleeing plays into the plot at all.

After Will’s character is captured, it’s up to son (played by his real life son Jaden) to rescue him. Sounds intriguing and could be fun, but if this has one of those Shyamalan twists at the end it’s a guaranteed dud. Luckily he didn’t write this, Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana) and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) are on the hook there. Is anyone still into this guy as a director after The Last Airbender or The Happening? Take a look at the pics below and let us know what you think.

Schwarzenegger and Stallone in Hospital After ‘Expendables 2′ and ‘The Last Stand’ Shoots

February 8, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News

Schwarzenegger recently tweeted this picture of himself and Sylvester Stallone in the hospital as they both prepared to go in for some shoulder work. Hopefully they’ll be as good as new for their next adventure, The Tomb. The inclusion of the hashtag #greattobeback at the end of the tweet sounds like the boys are having a blast, and putting their bodies through the ringer for our entertainment. A resounding never ending thanks for that. Best of luck to both and hopefully a speedy recovery.

The Tweet:

After all the action, stunts & physical abuse shooting The Expendables 2 and The Last Stand, it was time for a little tune up on my shoulder. Look who was coincidentally waiting in line behind me for his shoulder surgery. Now we’re ready for another round of great times and action when we shoot The Tomb. #greattobeback

Confirmed: Schwarzenegger and Stallone Team Up Again in ‘The Tomb’

February 8, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News

Worried that Arnold Schwarzenegger appearing in Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables 2 won’t be enough machismo for ya? Worry not action fans, it’s been confirmed that both will be teaming up for the Summit Entertainment prison escape flick The Tomb. I can’t begin to gush about this project, especially for these two. Here’s a little run down of the plot and their characters.

Stallone will be playing the main character Ray Breslin, the world’s foremost authority on structural integrity. He’s not only analyzed high tech prison designs, he’s created them. But now he must escape from a prison of his own design, a feat that will challenge his ingenuity and knowledge to the max. Then there’s Schwarzenegger’s Church, described as a complex inmate encompassing all shades of grey. He pulls the prisoners together and stops them from losing their humanity as they fight to stay alive.

Producer Mark Canton had this to say about the project…

“I am thrilled to be making ‘The Tomb’ with two film icons – Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It is the perfect pairing for this high octane thriller. Robbie Brenner, Emmett/Furla, Kevin King-Templeton and I have been working long and hard with Summit to bring them together for this dynamic project.”

The Tomb is set to start filming in Louisiana this spring and helmed by Swedish director Mikael Håfström (The Rite, Derailed (the Clive Owen one, not the JCVD one), 1408). Schwarzenegger has currently wrapped on Jee-woon Kim’s The Last Stand where he’s on the other side of the law playing a Sheriff. Both can be seen this summer in The Expendables 2.

‘X-Men’ Scribe Zak Penn to Rewrite ‘Karate Kid’ Sequel

It should come as no great surprise that Sony pictures is moving forward with a sequel to the smash hit Karate Kid. The 2010 reboot grossed a staggering $359 million dollars worldwide on a budget of $40 million. Zak Penn (Last Action Hero, The Incredible Hulk) has been brought in to take a crack at the script originally hatched by Kung Fu Panda screenwriters Cyrus Voris and Ethan Reiff. At this point in development no plot details have been leaked and there has been no official announcement that stars Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith will return. However since Karate Kid was an unexpected phenomenon, I’m sure both actors can clear their schedules for another go around. After being pleasantly surprised at the quality of the rebooted franchise I’ll be one of the first in line for this follow-up.

WWE Superstar Dave Bautista to Appear in ‘Riddick’ Sequel

February 7, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News

Looks like Vin Diesel hasn’t gotten enough of sharing the screen with pro wrestling’s biggest stars. Last summer Diesel faced off against Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in Fast Five and now fellow mesomorph Dave Bautista has been enlisted to (presumably) play a villain in the still Untitled Riddick Sequel. Bautista has shown a real flair for acting and he has a big screen presence. If you haven’t seen his work check out the evocative and underrated House of the Rising Sun. This recent announcement is another in a string of recent casting news that included high profile additions such as Jordi Molla, Katee Sackhoff and Karl Urban. The film is in production at the moment in Montreal with returning director David Twohy at the helm again. Full synopsis below…

“Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction”.

‘Wedding Crashers’ Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson Reteam for ‘Interns’

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson the comedic duo behind the smash hit Wedding Crashers are reuniting once again. This time with director Shawn Levy (Real Steel) at the helm working from a script written by Vaughn. Levy and Vaughn collaborated on the recently wrapped Neighborhood Watch, and this new film should be the next project for both. After the debacle that was the cinematic turds known as The Dilemma and The Big Year, Vaughn and Wilson are in need of a bit hit. Wedding Crashers banked $209,255,921 or $259,203,100 adjusted for 2012 dollars. Full synopsis below…

Fox Sets a Date With ‘The Wolverine’

February 7, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News

submit to reddit

Apparently Fox isn’t upset with getting stuck with the bill on the last outing with Wolverine, as the newest film has been set to release on July 26, 2013. The film has continually been delayed, with Darren Aronofsky (strange choice to begin with in my opinion) leaving and James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Knight and Day) stepping in to helm the Hugh Jackman (ya he’s back) starrer.

With the successful reboot X-Men: First Class allowing for that franchise to continue without Wolverine, Fox has been desperate to get a side-going series starring the most famous X-Man. Let’s not forget that X-Men Origins: Wolverine would have been a complete failure without that first astonishing $85M opening weekend (which quickly plummeted by 70% the following weekend proving the film sucked), but proving that there is a demand for the character, and thus Fox continues to push Wolverine.

As we saw with Sony and Marvel’s relationship (and really anyone licensing other’s characters) Fox is probably contractually obligated to continue making films to hold on to the rights, especially since Marvel is now owned by Disney and has in the past bought back rights to other characters. I like Wolverine, but honestly we need a little longer of a break from this, push it back to 2014 and come back full bore without Jackman. Not that he’s bad in the role, but I’d like to see something a little different at this point, not unlike what happened with X-Men: First Class reinvigorating my interest with the X-Men. What do you think? Something you’re looking forward to?

New Pics From ‘Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter’

February 7, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News

submit to reddit

I was wondering what this might look like, and suspected we’d wind up with something between Van Helsing and In Hell, looks like I was right. I complained in an earlier podcast about the look of The Woman in Black being very self-serving in that these period piece horror movies are purposefully set in a time that people equate to creepy wooden houses and bridges with characters dressed as if in a Washington Irving story for effect only. But I think it’s safe to say that with a title like Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter there’s more than just a simple past time setting to this flick. Check out the 5 photos below (thanks to EW) and let us know what you think.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter opens in theaters on June 22, 2012. Based on the book by Seth Grahame-Smith, who also wrote the script, it stars Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jimmi Simpson, Robin McLeavy, Alan Tudyk (yeah!) and Rufus Sewell.

Robert Rodriguez Confirms ‘Machete 2: Machete Kills’

Robert Rodriguez’s Grind-house stint just got longer as he has announced that we will be getting the second installment of the planned trilogy off the ground sometime this year. Rodriguez is partnering with producer Alexander Rodnyansky to deliver a sequel titled Machete Kills. Despite Machete grossing a paltry $26 million at the domestic box-office, fan interest and solid DVD/Blu-Ray sales have been enough to further the exploits of the ‘baddest Mexican on the planet’. Presumably Danny Trejo will return as Machete. Rodriguez had this to say about the project…

“The fan response to the Machete character has been fanatical since his first appearance,” Rodriguez said. “Machete is truly a super hero and Machete Kills will be bigger and more ambitious than the first time.”

For those 1980′s film freaks eager to see Johnny 5 back on the big screen you may be disappointed to hear the producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein are going in a more family friendly direction. The orignal Short Circuit grossed $40,697,761 back in 1986.

Bob Weinstein had this to say regarding the possible new franchise…

“Dimension has had great success with the ‘Spy Kids’ family series which grossed over $500 million worldwide. We are looking for ‘Short Circuit’ to be our next family franchise and are excited to be working with Matt Lieberman and Tim Hill, who has had great international success with ‘Hop’ and ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’.”

After Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Underworld have shown surprisingly hefty IMAX grosses studios are eager to exploit the format (and higher ticket prices) on their own films. Audiences burnt out on 3D have seemingly turned to the large screen presentation as an alternative to the in your face distractions that seem to burden films today. Lionsgate studios has announced a limited one week engagement for The Hunger Games at IMAX locations across the country. The film opens March 23 2012. Studio head Joe Drake had this to say about the news.

“With this news, the release of The Hunger Games has truly become an epic event. The Hunger Games and IMAX are a match made in heaven — fans love this book because its world is so vividly imagined and seeing the film in IMAX will make them feel as if they have landed right in the middle of the action. It is the ideal way for fans to experience this film for the first time.”

After a solid $53 million dollar opening weekend, word of mouth quickly sunk this wannabe blockbuster. Having already spent big money to post convert the movie into 3D, the producers still felt the film was lacking. Shortly before the release date and additional $9 million was spent on visual effects work. Even though Green Lantern lost a ton of money during its theatrical run, Warner Bros. still has talked about sequel possibilities.

Space Jam (1996)

Box Office Gross: $90,418,342     Adjusted: $162,834,842

Michael Jordan agrees to help the Looney Toons play a basketball game vs. alien slavers to determine their freedom. Warner Bros. attempted to revitalize its animation division with this family adventure that blended live action and animation in the style of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), reportedly coming in with a price tag of $100 million. Basketball legend Michael Jordan stars as himself, a retired sports hero trying his hand at baseball and failing miserably. Meanwhile, the Looney Tunes gang, led by Bugs Bunny, are kidnapped by aliens called the Nerdlucks. It seems that the Nerdlucks’ theme park, Moron Mountain (a barely-veiled dig at Disney) is failing to attract customers. The space invaders are convinced that the appearance of Bugs and his pals Porky Pig and Speedy Gonzalez will beef up business. Bugs makes his captors a deal — they’ll play a game of basketball for their freedom. When the Nerdlucks stack the deck by pilfering the talent of NBA superstars Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing, the Warner Bros. heroes enlist the aid of Jordan, who returns to the court to help the classic characters. While he prepares to play, Jordan is aided by fellow celebrity Bill Murray. Director Joe Pytka previously created many of the television commercials that featured Jordan as a paid endorser.

New Pictures of Van Damme on the Set of Universal Soldier 4

Here’s three new photos Van Damme posted on his Facebook page from the set of Universal Soldier 4: A New Dimension featuring a bald headed JCVD. I gotta say hairless is not the look for Van Damme. John Hyams (son of Peter) is again at the helm which, as Jason can attest to in his three star review of the previous John Hyams directed installment Universal Soldier: Regeneration, is definitely a good thing. Van Damme is showing his age in lines, creases and some droopiness. Hopefully that’s as far as it goes though and we get to see some butt kicking. If not there’s always the showdown between JCVD and Stallone in Expendables 2 to look forward to. The last shot reminds me of Lance Henriksen for some reason. First Picture of Vin Diesel From Set of Riddick 3

I’m still not sold on another Riddick flick, but I’ll probably wind up seeing it regardless. Vin Diesel posted this up on his Facebook page so he must be proud of the costuming, but let’s be honest, it looks riddick-ulous (funny? no?). The armor looks like some He-man plastic toy armor I had back in the day. While I loved Pitch Black, the second in the franchise, Chronicles of Riddick, was the iceberg that sank the ship. David Twohy had envisioned this as a trilogy. Luckily for director Twohy, Vin Diesel had another very profitable franchise with Universal, Fast and Furious, so they kinda owed him one. Plus Universal loves to make sci-fi flicks that tank. The one thing I am looking forward to in this installment – Katee Sackhoff. Check out Diesel below in all his Richard B. Riddick glory and let us know what you think.

Confirmed: Expendables 2 Will be PG-13

January 19, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News

submit to reddit

We should have known that any rumor started by Chuck Norris couldn’t be a rumor, and even if it were a rumor, the minute it left his mouth it would become fact. Earlier in a foreign interview Norris said that Expendables 2 would be PG-13 per his request. Now this has been confirmed by Ain’t it Cool in a statement from Sylvester Stallone.

The PG13 rumor is true, but before your readers pass judgement, trust me when I say this film is LARGE in every way and delivers on every level. This movie touches on many emotions which we want to share with the broadest audience possible, BUT, fear not, this Barbeque of Grand scale Ass Bashing will not leave anyone hungry.

It makes sense for them to try and capture more of an audience this time around, and one sure-fire way Hollywood has found to do that is lower the rating to get that teen crowd in the theater. There’s probably a certain amount of people that won’t see this sequel that saw the original, mainly because the first film ended up as a flawed homage to 80′s and 90′s action flicks. This change in rating could fill those now empty seats and more. In all honesty I don’t remember the original being filled with cursing, and I won’t miss the CGI blood effects either, although Terry Crews blowing people away with that big gun was pretty fun. I doubt this will have much affect on whether this is a good movie or not, and certainly should be no judge of a fun time.

Quentin Tarantino’s Best and Worst of 2011

I always find Tarantino’s best and worst lists to be conversation starters, mainly because he often makes some strange choices for someone that you normally think as liking strange movies. His picks are usually a decent mix of small and large flicks that most everyone has heard of in some capacity. But there’s always some questionable stuff, just check out his number eleven best pick this year. I’m also a huge fan of lists, especially from people who work in the industry. One of my all-time favorite movies and movie quotes is from High Fidelity: “I agreed that what really matters is what you like, not what you are like… Books, records, films – these things matter. Call me shallow but it’s the f***in’ truth“. If you’re interesting in mine and Jason’s best and worst picks from 2011 check out this podcast. Sony Releases Official Plot Synopsis for ‘Total Recall’ Remake

January 16, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News

submit to reddit

Although there is no Mars involved in the remake, it sounds like exactly the same movie. I think I’d actually preferred it if they had copied the Mars subplot anyhow, keeping the film set on Earth might make it seem quite a bit smaller in scope. Then again Colin Farrell is quite a but smaller in scope than Arnold Schwarzenegger, so there ya go. While I’m still not sold on Farrell, I am really liking the secondary cast here, Kate Beckinsale, Bryan Cranston, Jessica Biel, and Bill Nighy. I’m also a big fan of Len Wiseman, which after our Die Hard marathon we kicked 2011 off with, I’ve come to notice his directorial style resembles another favorite director of mine, John McTiernan. Regardless I’m a science fiction fan and will see this movie, for better or worse. Read the official synopsis below and let us know what you think.

“Total Recall” is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

The League of Extraordinary Black Film Directors

After George Lucas spoke recently about the difficulties he had getting Red Tails made because of the all African American cast, this guest post explores the idea that African American directors are having a much better time getting movies made in the indie world. Hollywood is currently hiding behind the ruse that they don’t know how to market these types of films. Look at what Lionsgate is doing with Tyler Perry flicks, not to mention 2011′s surprise hit from stand up comic Kevin Hart, Laugh at My Pain, for proof that these films sell, and don’t take $40 million marketing campaigns to do well. Hollywood is too afraid of failing, and they often loose out because of it.

Commercial films are great in these cinema times, but if you want good acting, a good script and great directing, you go independent and that is where new African American directors are going. You don’t know their names yet, but hopefully you will. Take Dee Rees, who made Pariah, about a black girl growing up and coming out as a lesbian. It was a hard sell, but she got it made and there is a lot of talk that Kim Wayans (the famous sister of Keenan Ivory Wayans) may be receiving an Oscar nomination or at least a Spirit award (for independent movies) nomination. Either way, it is a step up!

Ava Duvemay’s Middle of Nowhere explores how a woman’s love is changed when her husband is sent to prison. It is a love story, but it is not as simple as that, and a highly praised Sundance movie in competition. She also directed I Will Follow, made in 2010, starring Salli Richardson-Whittfield (Eureka). Tanya Hamilton is another up and comer, who wrote and directed Night Catches Us. A simply fabulous movie no one saw, from art houses in Hollywood to the Cinema in Birmingham. It was about an ex Black Panther coming home. Her next project is Tribe, which explores the lives of two Native American brothers, one of whom is half black.

‘Twilight’ Could Continue on After ‘Breaking Dawn’, Lionsgate CEO Suggests

Twilight may be almost over in most fan’s eyes with the heavily anticipated release of Breaking Dawn: Part 2 next November. Recently Summit Entertainment was purchased by Lionsgate in a move that some thought was controversial, however this week Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer told the LA TIMES that he envisions the franchise continuing on after the next installment. Here is the quote from Feltheimer…

It’s hard for me to imagine a movie that does $700 million-plus doesn’t have ongoing value. It’s an amazing franchise that they have done a great job of maintaining with absolutely no deterioration. So the simple answer is ‘Boy I hope so.’

At this point there has been no official word if this continuation will be a new feature film, a complete reboot, or a television series. I think that Lionsgate should try to entice novelist Stephenie Meyer to write a further ‘movie only’ sequel. That could be a compelling reason to further the series, without it seeming like an outright cash grab. Whatever the decision it will ultimately come down to money. Some box office pundits are forecasting Breaking Dawn: Part 2 taking in an excess of 700 million dollars. With such a hot property and a massively devoted fan base continuing the franchise seems like a very logical (and profitable) decision.

‘Avengers’ Will be Told Through the Eyes of Captain America

Marvel’s the Avengers may be heavily sold on Iron Man’s inclusion in the group, but according to Joss Whedon in Entertainment Weekly it’s told through Captain America’s eyes.

I set out with a very simple problem: There is no reason for these people to be in the same movie. So that’s what my movie has to be about. So much of the movie takes place from Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) perspective, since he’s the guy who just woke up and sees this weird ass world. Everyone else has been living in it.

It sounds like an intriguing approach, but no one told the marketing department. Just read the official synopsis below, you’ll see Iron Man and Downey Jr’s names appear first while Captain America is fourth, at least Chris Evans is right after Downey. Also not sure this synopsis sounds anything like what Whedon described above. Let us know what you think.

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”–the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble in summer 2012. In “Marvel’s The Avengers,” superheroes team up to pull the world back from the brink of disaster when an unexpected enemy threatens global security.

Steven Spielberg not Directing Jurassic Park 4 – Talks Robopocalypse and Tintin 2

Speaking with Collider, Steven Spielberg talked a little about his plans for Jurassic Park 4, Robopocalypse and The Adventures of Tintin 2. He’s out as director on JP 4, is likely to start shooting Robopocalypse in September, Peter Jackson is directing the Tintin sequel, but Spielberg would very much like to return as director for the third.

I was thrilled to hear that Spielberg might be directing the fourth installment of Jurassic Park, but to be honest this is a franchise that many director’s can swoop in and direct successfully. It doesn’t require a Spielbergian flare to be good, as long as there are dinosaurs and running you’ve hit about all the required marks. Still I’m excited and can’t wait for both JP 4 and Robopocalypse. Tintin 2 and 3 I could do without.

About Jurassic Park 4 – “I can tell you that I’m not directing it. I’m producing it though.”

About Robopocalypse – “I’m making a science fiction movie probably in September called Robopocalypse based on Daniel Wilson’s book. It’s a cautionary tale about war between human beings and robots. It’s a big crowd pleaser, I think, a big action popcorn movie with a message. The message is actually in the popcorn! You have to get the popcorn, dig down deep in the bottom and they’ll be a message about what Robopocalypse is really about!”

About the Tintin sequel – “I’m not going to say which stories have been chosen for Peter Jackson’s sequel because Peter and I agreed that we weren’t going to let that information out yet,” he said. “The script is now being written. It’s more than one book, but it’s not three books, so that means it’s two books. It’s two and a half books that we’re combining with ‘The Secret of the Unicorn.’ And Peter will start working on the film this year. When he’s done shooting ‘The Hobbit,’ he’ll begin his performance capture work with the actors later in 2012, which I’m very excited about. And of course, I’m hoping I’ll be able to direct the third one. I’d love to do the third one because I had so much fun on the first one.”

First Official Image From James Bond ‘Skyfall’ is Worrisome!

Unless you count the pic of the clapper board that was tweeted back in November, this is the first real official image from Skyfall. Why bother putting out this kind of stuff? I know it’s the first pic, but it looks somewhat random, as if might be a really nicely lit paparazzi shot of Daniel Craig lounging at the hotel pool after a long day’s shoot. We know Craig’s Bond is all about showing off his fit physique; sexy is how they’ve tried to sell these new Bond flicks, but I want slick not sexy. With Q coming back into the picture this Bond should be a little more entertaining, not that Casino Royale wasn’t a great movie, but now it’s time to get back to the fun Bond. It almost feels like this pic of Craig’s crack is more for the ladies than any true Bond fan. Check out the image below and chime in with your thoughts!

Lionsgate Buys Summit for $412.5 Million

January 13, 2012 in Movie Blog, Movie News

Lionsgate has officially announced that Summit Entertainment has given in to them and sold for a mere $412.5 million, which is about $300 million shy of what was being reported earlier ($700 million). I’m still not sold in these being a good idea. Sure it gives Lionsgate a few good franchises, namely Twilight and Red (let’s not forget Step Up!), but it does take out one more small studio, and it can be assured than Lionsgate won’t pick up the slack in the marketplace that Summit’s exit will leave. By that I mean there will be less movies put out by the two combined companies than if they still stood apart as competition. This is bad for anyone that likes more low-budgeted indie fare. That being said, at this price it’s probably going to work out in Lionsgate’s favor. We’ll just have to wait and see. It’s interesting how Lionsgate is trying to spin it in their press release (read below), but I’m sure that “bringing together Summit’s Twilight Saga film franchise and Lionsgate’s highly anticipated Hunger Games franchise” won’t make any difference for audiences (unless they plan some sort of mash-up, I would watch Katniss Everdeen taking out the Twilight vamps with her bow and arrow any day). Especially considering Twilight is over after one more movie, unless God forbid they are planning a TV show (crap, I shouldn’t have put that out into the universe). My first suggestion would be to replace Lionsgate’s marketing department with Summit’s, Lionsgate’s trailers and the graphics used in them are horrendous. I do wonder if they continue using the Summit name or not. Check out the press release below and let us know what you think. Read the rest of this entry →
