The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) – Review

4 Stars

Ben Stiller proves himself an extremely talented force behind the camera, and never before has he been so appealing as an actor. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a tour de force, a fantastic film with a dynamite cast, subtle humor and amusing riffs on action-films and advertising. This updated retelling of the 1955 film was originally to star the rubber-faced Jim Carrey, when that fell through Stiller picked up the project and it’s hard to imagine anyone else inhabiting the character or directing the film, it’s that special.

Next of Kin (1989) – Review

2 Stars

Next of Kin has the feel of a forgotten Steven Seagal picture. It has all the usual motifs that accompany the WB/Seagal pairings from that era, a cop with revenge on his mind, a loner working on the force but treated as an outsider due to his beliefs, and the presence of the mafia. However, Next of Kin stars Patrick Swayze, who sports the Seagal-like ponytail, as Tucker Gates, a hill-billy turned Chicago detective. When his younger brother (Bill Paxton), is murdered, Tucker’s older brother, Briar (Liam Neeson), arrives from back home to carry out revenge Kentucky-style. Swayze is caught in the middle between upholding society’s law and siding with his family.

Top 5 Best Jennifer Aniston Movies

Jennifer Aniston rose to superstardom from her role as Rachel on the long running and much beloved television show Friends. Her cinema career has been mixed. Trying to launch herself as a feature star ended in a string of failures, but soon Aniston found her stride taking indie-type flicks, smaller roles and playing opposite of established movie stars. She’s had a part in 23 movies that have gone on to gross over $1.2 billion domestically. Her latest film, Wanderlust, opens in theaters everywhere Friday February 24, 2012. Because of her smaller roles it is difficult to say that all 23 of those films are Jennifer Aniston movies, thus here’s a few runner-ups that were left off this list because of a smaller role – She’s the One, Office Space, He’s Just Not That Into You, Marley and Me and Horrible Bosses. Enjoy this list of the top five best Jennifer Aniston movies. Author discretion is the final criteria used to distinguish these best Jennifer Aniston films.

Leprechaun (1993)

Box Office Gross: $8,556,940     Adjusted: $0

Jennifer Aniston made her film debut in this horror story about a psychotic, six-centuries-old leprechaun on a murder spree throughout North Dakota. This low-budget horror flick is one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies.

Tower Heist (2011) – Trailer

Brett Ratner’s latest action/comedy looks like another sure fire holiday hit. Teaming up Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy is a great idea and personally I’m excited to see Murphy back in ‘adult’ comedies. Tower Heist resembles an Ocean’s 11 caper with a timely storyline and a healthy dose of humor. Hits theaters Nov. 4th 2011.

Dodgeball (2004) – Review

3 Stars

A group of misfits and freaks lead by Vince Vaughn enter a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament in order to save their cherished local gym from the onslaught of a corporate health fitness chain. The thin premise is highlighted by a hysterical performance from Ben Stiller as a egomaniacal feather haired health freak. His character is solely responsible for some of the film’s biggest laughs. A slew of celebrity cameos are littered throughout and each is surprisingly well used notably David Hasselhoff as the coach of the German team.

The Heartbreak Kid (2007) – Review

2 1/2 Stars

The Farrelly Brothers remake of the 1972 film ‘The Heartbreak Kid’ is a hilarious and endearing film from the modern-day kings of ‘gross-out’ gags. Staying true to form the Farrelly’s have delivered another in a long line of comedies bordering on crudeness and sentimentality sometimes within the same scene. ‘Something About Mary’ star Ben Stiller has found a way to make an unappealing character sympathetic and often very amusing.

Little Fockers (2010) – Review

1 1/2 Stars

This dirty, mean spirited sequel to the monstrously successful ‘Fockers’ franchise should put an end to the series. Ben Stiller is once again joined by regulars Robert DeNiro, Owen Wilson and Terri Pollo, none of whom are actually required to put on a performance. The tired screenplay credited to two writers has Stiller jumping through hoops in the hopes that he will be appointed head of the family. Of course Jack Byrnes (DeNiro) still has his eyes on Gaylord Focker (Stiller) even after years of wedded bliss to his daughter and a growing grandchild. It’s a ridiculous premise that was played out by the end of 2004’s cartoon-ish entry ‘Meet the Fockers’. (more…)
