Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) – Review

3 Stars

Avengers: Age of Ultron grossed over $450 million at the domestic box office this summer. Yet, it somehow feels as if it was lost in the shuffle of Jurassic World, Mission Impossible and Mad Max. The sequel doesn’t manage to hit the creative peaks of The Avengers (2012) but, it is a solid popcorn entertainment piece with occasional flashes of brilliance. Murky plotting and a soggy second act nearly torpedo the fun. Luckily, the superior cast (all fully inhabiting these silly characters with surprising humanity) saves the day.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) – Review

4 Stars

The ageless wonder, Tom Cruise, is back to his high energy antics in his latest slam-bang thrill ride, Mission:Impossible-Rogue Nation. This entry is the strongest ‘spy’ movie since Casino Royale back in 2006. Now, that Bond does more brooding than bashing, Ethan Hunt is back on the job to satisfy that international intrigue itch and send audiences home sedated. This fifth film in the M:I series is an absolute joy to behold, clever and clean in terms of storytelling, editing, and overall execution. Director/writer Christopher McQuarrie does an excellent job behind the camera with assured direction and some brilliant set-pieces.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013) – Review

2 Stars

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters sports a curious credit, produced by Will Farrell and Adam Mckay. After a bit of research I found that Mckay was developing this to direct Farrell and presumably their Stepbrothers collaborator John C. Reily, though I’m not sure how that would have played out without a female Gretel. Never-the-less it’s quite a tell that the genesis of this screen incarnation had its roots in comedy, perhaps that is fitting since the final product, while leagues removed from the original concept, is a bit of a howler. Particularly the grown-up Gretel’s opening line to Peter Stormare, the sheriff of Oxford and leader of a Salem-esque witch hunt.

The Bourne Legacy (2012) – Review

3 Stars

How do you review a films like The Bourne Legacy? The Bond movies have turned into serious pieces of art. The Mission Impossible franchise is glossy low brow fun. Then we have the Bourne series, which plays like Sidney Lumet’s The Verdict inter-cut with a Michael Bay flick. In this particular instance, it worked for me. Although I think I’ve had my fill of the Bourne universe at this point.

The Bourne Legacy (2012) – Trailer

Tony Gilroy moves from series screenwriter to director on this fourth film in the lucrative Bourne franchise. Universal pictures couldn’t lure star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass back for another installment so they went in a new direction and cast Jeremy Renner in the lead. While this is not a direct sequel to the previous trilogy it is in the ‘vein’ of the Robert Ludlum novels.

New Mission Impossible 4 – Ghost Protocol (2011) Trailer

After news that six minutes of The Dark Knight Rises will be featured on 70mm prints of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol in IMAX theaters you’d think there’d be little else needed to get people to go check it out, but this new trailer gives us many more reasons. If you’re somehow upset over the changes to the Bond series, MI:4 is set to swoop in and take its place. With sleek action and state of the art gadgetry this advert is reminiscent of a Pierce Brosnan Bond movie. Brad Bird’s direction looks spot on and continuing with the running gag of Tom Cruise’s Hunt coming so close to death right in the beginning and getting it out of the way is a strong choice (that gag is wearing on me). The failure of summer movies to deliver great action might just be made up here. This go around the team consists of Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, Jeremy Renner as Brandt, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, and Paula Patton as Jane Carter. Will you be catching the early IMAX showings (specifically in the real IMAX theaters for Dark Knight footage)?

The Avengers (2012) – Trailer

It’s finally arrived, the trailer for Marvel’s The Avengers! I have to say it doesn’t necessarily look bad, but having all those heroes together does make it seem a little fake. Blending these mythologies, no matter how cleverly done (and I’m a Joss Whedon fan as well), may simply be undoable on any believable scale. We talked earlier about some set pics that looked like the heroes were fans dressed up for comic-con (the EW Avenger pics did look better though) and this trailer doesn’t really help those thoughts. Also interesting that the trailer heavily features Robert Downey Jr, seeing as Iron Man is the top earner here it’s no surprise. I wonder if that plays into the movie at all, is Iron Man featured in the film more than the others? No look at the baddies here, just a simple voice-over, so there is more to look forward to when real trailers hit later. The Avengers is set to release May 4, 2012 and stars Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Samuel L Jackson (Nick Fury), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) and is directed by Joss Whedon.

New EW Photos of The Avengers Looking Better

A few weeks ago we posted some disparaging photos from The Avengers set that we thought made the heros look more like dressed up Comic-Con attendees. While some of the images below don’t help that idea much, others (especially ScarJo with the explosion behind her) remind us that things can look vastly different through a camera lens. Seeing the actors in the moment versus posing with looky-loos makes all the difference.

The Town (2010) – Review

4 Stars

Ben Affleck’s second directorial effort The Town is another gritty tale of violence and classism centered in Boston. Much like his debut film Gone Baby Gone the actor/director displays a sure hand behind the camera erasing any doubts that he may have been a one trick pony. Chronicling the Irish pride and segregated nature of Bean-town through the knowing eyes of a local is what gives the film a very high feeling of authenticity. Even the leads seem as if they have dialed down their attractiveness to fit in with the hard living lower class peoples they are portraying. Affleck is the quiet anchor of the picture playing a failed hockey star now relegated to bank heists to support himself. The flashy role goes to spark plug Jeremy Renner who is absolutely riveting as the hot-headed best friend that is prone to violent outburst. It’s Renner’s idea to kidnap the female bank teller (Rebecca Hall) during the latest heist as collateral in their escape. Once the gang has released the hostage they realize the girl is a local and she may be working with the FBI. Affleck assigns himself the role of following her around which turns unexpectedly into a love affair based on a series of lies. (more…)

Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol – Trailer

Tom Cruise is back along with series newcomers Jeremy Renner, Josh Holloway and Paula Patton in the continuing adventures of Super-spy Ethan Hunt and his IMF team. Pixar veteran Brad Bird (The Incredibles) makes his live-action debut in the director’s chair. This short trailer looks like a return to ‘forum’ after the faltering MI:3, hopefully Bird and Company can right the course of the series and from the glimpses I see here things look promising. My only complaints is the peculiar use of an Eminem track and the underuse of the legendary Mission Impossible theme. Either way come Dec 16th 2011 I’ll be lining up for a ticket.

The Hurt Locker (2008) – Review

2 1/2 Stars

The Hurt Locker tells the story an Army bomb squad, led by SSG William James (Jeremy Renner), as it travels across Iraq disarming situations more than bombs. The film is incredibly unbelievable and seems to be based more on the idea of bomb disarmament than truth. Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty work well together and lend some sort of credibility to the film. The majority of loss is generated by the characters themselves, instead of the war they were thrust into. (more…)
