X-Men (2000) – Review

3 Stars

Marvel’s current cinema domination can be traced back to X-Men, the Bryan Singer directed film that started off the longest running franchise in superhero history. This serious-minded film is ripe with good actors delivering intelligent dialogue, surrounded by captivating production design all while slyly referencing racial, sexual and other forms of discrimination. This inaugural entry into the X-Men cannon is flawed and feels overly expository, but remains entertaining and full of compelling characters to warrant a positive recommendation.

Fox Sets a Date With ‘The Wolverine’

Apparently Fox isn’t upset with getting stuck with the bill on the last outing with Wolverine, as the newest film has been set to release on July 26, 2013. The film has continually been delayed, with Darren Aronofsky (strange choice to begin with in my opinion) leaving and James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Knight and Day) stepping in to helm the Hugh Jackman (ya he’s back) starrer.

With the successful reboot X-Men: First Class allowing for that franchise to continue without Wolverine, Fox has been desperate to get a side-going series starring the most famous X-Man. Let’s not forget that X-Men Origins: Wolverine would have been a complete failure without that first astonishing $85M opening weekend (which quickly plummeted by 70% the following weekend proving the film sucked), but proving that there is a demand for the character, and thus Fox continues to push Wolverine.

As we saw with Sony and Marvel’s relationship (and really anyone licensing other’s characters) Fox is probably contractually obligated to continue making films to hold on to the rights, especially since Marvel is now owned by Disney and has in the past bought back rights to other characters. I like Wolverine, but honestly we need a little longer of a break from this, push it back to 2014 and come back full bore without Jackman. Not that he’s bad in the role, but I’d like to see something a little different at this point, not unlike what happened with X-Men: First Class reinvigorating my interest with the X-Men. What do you think? Something you’re looking forward to?

5. Scoop (2006)

Box Office Gross: $10,525,717     Adjusted: $0

The late U.K. journalist Joe Strombel (Ian McShane) is being mourned by his colleagues—even as, stuck in limbo, Joe remains committed to pursuing a hot tip on the identity of “the Tarot Card Killer” at large in London. But how can his legwork get done now? Via the very much alive Sondra Pransky (Scarlett Johansson). Sondra is an American journalism student visiting friends in London. During a stage performance by another American, magician Sid Waterman (Woody Allen), Sondra is shocked to find herself able to see and hear Joe. From beyond, he gives her the scoop of a lifetime and urges her to pursue it. Sondra immediately starts chasing the big story, enlisting the aid of a reluctant Sid. That chase leads right to handsome British aristocrat Peter Lyman (Hugh Jackman). Soon, Sondra finds that the romance of her life may well be the dangerous scoop she’s looking for.

Is Marvel’s Deadpool Film Still a Go?

Wade Wilson aka Deadpool is one of my favorite comic book characters of all time. Unfortunately, like all Deadpool fans I was devastated by the way he was portrayed in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). No scratch that, I wasn’t devastated, I was pissed. They did an absolutely horrendous job with the character in the film, and part of me hoped the whole project would just crawl into a corner and die. Deep down, however, I knew that if done right a Deadpool film could be one of the best comic book movies ever made. It seems producer Lauren Shuler Donner agrees. At the resent press junket for the release of X:Men: First Class on DVD and Blu-ray Shuler had quite a bit to say about the film.

5. The Shadow (1994)

Box Office Gross: $32,063,435     Adjusted for 2011: $55,075,469

null Alec Baldwin’s turn in the role of a superhero is one of the best albeit forgotten films in the genera. Surfacing in the summer of 1994 with little fanfare; presumably from audience fatigue after two Batman films, The Rocketeer and a legion of wannabe blockbuster arrived in less than five years. The Shadow separates itself from others in the pack through it’s exquisite production and art design and a detailed period setting in the art-deco friendly 1930′s. The character of Cranston Lamont/ The Shadow originated on radio series almost 80 years ago. Apparently 1990′s audiences weren’t interested in their grandparent’s superhero and left this little seen film to die a quick death at the box-office. In hindsight it’s a entertaining piece of escapist fun with slick direction from Highlander vet Russell Mulcahy, a self deprecating script and a polished look that provides as many visual thrills as the stunning special effects.

Darren Aronofsky drops out of ‘The Wolverine 2′

Despite a long friendship with star Hugh Jackman and a reporedly excellent script by Christopher Mcquarrie (Usual Suspects, Valkyrie), OSCAR nominated director Darren Aronofsky has decided to leave the production of ‘Wolverine 2′. Citing a divorce and possibly messy custody battle with soon to be ex-wife Rachel Weisz as the main reason for leaving the project. Continue reading

Bryan Singer Not Directing X-Men: First Class – News

Bryan Singer was originally slated to direct the next installment in the X-Men franchise, unfortunately he has been caught up with his newest film Jack the Giant Killer. Warner Bros again blocks Singer from directing another X-Men movie. They did so with X-Men: Last Stand when Singer was directing Superman. He is still signed on as producer though, and may get a chance to direct another X-Men movie as X-Men: First Class is only the beginning in a planned new prequel trilogy.
