House Party 3 (1994) – Review

Where to watch House Party 3

2 Stars

Come to a new House Party, where Kid, after a lifetime ‘playing the field’, falls in love and is about to get married. ‘Play’ plans to throw the rockin’est bachelor party ever – until ‘Kid’s’ three wise-crackin’ nephews come to town, intent on showing ‘Kid’ and ‘Play’ what parties are all about…

The House Party series comes to an inglorious conclusion with this third film that starts terribly before correcting itself with funny performances from comedians Bernie Mac, AJ Johnson, and Chris Tucker. Typically, movies with an awful opening ten minutes don’t right the ship; House Party 3 is saved from itself due to the ad-libbing of Mac and his trademark exasperated manner. That’s the enjoyable part. The bad part is a preteen rap group called “Immature,” all of whom display no acting talent and become obnoxious as the movie progresses.

House Party 3 often looks like a feature-length advertisement for the era’s popular musical artists, many of whom make cameo appearances in this film. Kid n’ Play are an effortlessly likable screen duo; their popularity predates the rise of Pauly Shore, Damon Wayans, and Jim Carrey on the big screen. Almost all of the pair’s filmography is pleasing; House Party 3 is unquestionably the low point of the original trilogy and their film careers.
