Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) – Review

Where to watch Independence Day: Resurgence

2 Stars

Two decades after the freak alien invasion that nearly destroyed mankind a new threat emerges. This Alien mothership is more than twice the size as the last one and once again, the world’s armies must band together to save the world. Do they have enough firepower or will this battle change and will aliens take over?

Independence Day became an instant cultural phenomenon during the summer of 1996. It catapulted its stars, Will Smith and the director Roland Emmerich, onto the coveted A-List while breaking global box-office records. Bill Pullman, playing a fictionally overly heroic POTUS, gives an iconic speech that is still (mockingly?) recited at uncountable July 4th BBQs to this day. The twenty-year wait for the arrival of Independence Day: Resurgence created anticipation that this limp sequel fails to live up to.

Independence Day: Resurgence isn’t able to achieve the epic scope of the original, which also featured state-of-the-art special effects, both of which are absent here. Also, MIA is Will Smith; his character is unceremoniously killed off-screen, and the movie lacks a charming personality to carry the film; instead, the movie offers a collection of bland new characters and uninteresting returning players. Reported plans for a follow-up sequel were scuttled after the poor reception this project received. ID4-2 is a pristine example of a cash grab that ruined a viable franchise.
