Where to watch My Boyfriend’s Back
Missy McCloud is the most beautiful girl in school and Johnny Dingle has been in love with her for years. One night, Johnny is killed trying to win her over, and soon he comes back from the dead, and wins Missy’s heart.
“My Boyfriend’s Back” is an enjoyable black comedy that combines the themes of 1980s John Hughes movies with the Creature Feature Horror films of the 1950s. Dean Lorey’s screenplay takes an unconventional concept, introduces vibrant characters, and surprisingly, conveys sentimentality. I caught this film during its PPV run on cable, and I appreciated the quirky onscreen antics and the dark storyline presented in a humorous way. This movie could easily have been a product of the Mel Brooks film factory; it surpasses anything he created in the 1990s, and had it been associated with him, it might have reached a much larger audience.
There is a lot of creative invention onscreen during the brief running time of My Boyfriend’s Back, which gives the film a memorable quality. Andrew Lowery is excellent as the undead teen who is smitten with the local beauty queen; he has a likable screen presence and good comedic timing. If you are looking for subtleness and deep meaning in a movie, then I can’t recommend My Boyfriend’s Back, but if you want a quirky viewing experience with some mean-spirited laughs, which I always do, then this is the movie for you.
