Blankman (1994) – Review

Where to watch Blankman

1 Star

Darryl is a childlike man with a genius for inventing various gadgets out of junk. When he stumbles on a method to make his clothes bulletproof, he decides to use his skills to be the lowest budgeted superhero of all.

Blankman stars Damon Wayans and David Allen Grier, both stars of the television sketch comedy show In Living Color. On that program, Wayans created a screen character named Handyman, a handicapped person with dreams of being a superhero, so it’s a bit confusing that we have Blankman, which features Wayans playing a character similar to his TV persona. The film’s juvenile ad campaign and toned-down violence and language suggest that this project, originally conceived as an R-rated adult comedy, morphed into PG-13 general audience fodder.

The humor in Blankman is too juvenile for adult audiences but the film is also mean-spirited making it too heavy for younger viewers. The popularity of Wayans and Grier due to their hit sketch television show is the only reason this film was green-lighted. There are rumors that the script was originally written for Howard Stern’s Fartman character, and this influence can be seen in the movie, especially in the elevator baby delivery scene. Even Stern declined to be associated with this low-brow materia
