The Matrix Revolutions (2003) – Review

Where to watch The Matrix Revolutions

2 Stars

The Matrix trilogy concludes with the visually stunning but narratively dull final chapter, The Matrix Revolutions. The opening thirty minutes of the movie consist of unending cyclical dialogue, which may test the patience of viewers. The story then settles into a familiar pattern established in the previous entries. While the imaginative art design and stylistic conceptualization are captivating, I wish something more interesting had happened within the world presented on-screen. Despite the harsh critical reception of The Matrix Reloaded, it is an epic work with layers of implied themes and meaning. Revolutions, however, is an uneasy mix of exposition and action that lacks grace in its transitions between beats.

It’s difficult to grade a film like this. The technical wizardry involved in the physical production is astounding and commendable. However, the story being told is a disappointing conclusion to one of the most influential films of the era. Could this tale have been condensed into one film? Perhaps, but then Reloaded would be a weaker movie. While the return of some characters is integral to the plot, others feel arbitrary. Surprisingly enough, “arbitrary” is a word that sums up this film perfectly.
