Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) – Review

Where to watch Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

3 Stars

Lawman Luke Hobbs and outcast Deckard Shaw form an unlikely alliance when a cyber-genetically enhanced villain threatens the future of humanity.

The Fast & Furious franchise pairs Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in their likely first solo spinoff. The core members of that beloved series are otherwise absent, save for the two bald alpha males of the title. While not technically part of the linear timeline of the F&F movies, ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ fit right in with a similar visual style and playful tone. The film is infused with energetic direction by John Wick co-helmer David Letich, and the film contains cartoon violence and chuckles.

The ‘family’ theme so prevalent in the F&F series has been carried over to Hobbs & Shaw; the film’s finale takes place on the tropical island of Somoa, and this sequence is masterfully executed by all the technical departments. The film’s 135-minute runtime is excessive, and with 20 minutes trimmed, it would be a tighter movie. Hobbs & Shaw is a welcomed throwback to the mismatched buddy movies of decades past while showcasing the industry’s biggest star in a shinny, expensive star vehicle.
