Superman: Doomsday (2007) – Review

Where to watch Superman: Doomsday

3 1/2 Stars

When LexCorps accidentally unleash a murderous creature, Doomsday, Superman meets his greatest challenge as a champion. Based on the “The Death of Superman” storyline that appeared in DC Comics’ publications in the 1990s.

Superman: Doomsday is DC Comics’ inaugural offering from the newly formed animation division. The bestselling comic book The Death of Superman, which became a national phenomenon upon its publication in 1992, is the basis for this cartoon. I hesitate to use the term because it vaguely implies something juvenile and lackluster, neither of which describes Superman: Doomsday. This animated feature is rated PG-13, a violent tale with mature thematic elements.

The exceptional visual storytelling is complemented by a solid script that gives the characters compelling motivations and complicated obstacles to overcome, both small and global. Superman: Doomsday, while a standalone feature, is a fantastic start to the DC Animated Movie Universe. Adam Baldwin and James Marster as Superman and Lex Luthor, respectively, are more effective than Anne Heche, who voices the role of Lois Lane. As an experience, ‘Doomsday’ will hold your attention without insulting your intelligence.
