Where to watch Highlander: The Source
The world is falling into chaos. As he roams a crumbling city, Duncan MacLeod, the Highlander, remembers happier times before the love of his life left… Hopeless and alone, MacLeod finds his way to a band of immortal companions, including his mysterious friend Methos, and a mortal, Watcher Joe Dawson. Together this small group sets out on a quest to find the origin of the first Immortal and The Source of their immortality.
Has there ever been a Highlander movie that didn’t have a troubled production history? This cult franchise has endured four subpar installments following the uneven original film. “Highlander: The Source,” directed by Brett Leonard—arguably the most skilled storyteller in the series and a filmmaker on par with Russell Mulcahy, who directed the first two movies—is considerably better than the directors of parts three and four. So why does “Highlander 5” feel so lackluster? It resembles fan fiction more than a professional film despite not being made by amateurs.
The returning cast, familiar to fans of the movie and television series, features many deep cuts that will delight Highlander enthusiasts. “Highlander: The Source” is a visually appealing film, but it falters in terms of narrative, culminating in a miscalculation during the closing moments that retcons the entire mythology. Hopefully, the upcoming reboot will be the “good” Highlander movie that long-suffering fans have been hoping for after decades of disappointment with their beloved franchise.
