Original Air Date: 12/03/1988 – “The Alien Solution”

It took the producers nine episodes to finally get it right in the first season of “Superboy,” delivering a fully realized episode that captures the character’s appeal as seen in other media. The story, written by Mike Carlin and Andy Helfer, successfully blends science fiction with a darker tone, all while working within the budgetary constraints of children’s afternoon television.

Stacy Haiduk gives a standout performance in a scene where her character is possessed by an alien being. Her portrayal of self-inflicted violence and threats against Superboy allows the actress to showcase her range, which had not been fully demonstrated earlier in the series. The special effects, while modest, are an improvement compared to previous episodes.

“The Alien Solution” is the first episode to incorporate elements from the comic books: Clark uses his ice breath to cool a soda can, and Superboy captures the alien in an oxygen cylinder. These authentic touches enhance the viewing experience. This episode is undoubtedly the best so far in the series and may be the peak of the season. One can only hope the show continues to improve from here.
