Cut and Run (1984) – Review

Where to watch Cut and Run

1 Star

A cameraman and a reporter head into the jungle searching for the missing son of a TV producer hoping to find a big story. What they get caught up in is a drug war which threatens to take their own lives.

The infamous Italian exploitation filmmaker Ruggero Deodato delivers another predictably cruel and crude movie set in the jungles of Latin America. I’m not a fan of The Cannibal Holocaust, Deodato’s most popular film, but I do cherish his fantasy sword and sorcery epic, The Barbarians. This leaves me at a bit of a loss when it comes to reviewing Cut and Run. I found the film to be clunky, mean-spirited, and lacking any creative visual style.

Michael Berryman and Willie Aames are the most recognizable cast members in a movie loaded with amateurish performances. There are three storylines that converge in a manner that should provide a lot more excitement and intrigue than it ultimately does. Cut and Run is a retread of Deodato’s seminal work. It feels lazily constructed, haphazardly assembled, and filled with despicable characters. This is one of the worst movies of 1984.
