Where to watch Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend
This thrilling, high-speed biopic reveals one man’s dream of making the world’s fastest car-and beating rival Enzo Ferrari.
Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend is told in two parts. The first half is dedicated to the young man who returns from the war with the idea of disrupting the tractor industry. This singular pursuit of engineering and manufacturing costs Lamborghini the companionship of his dear friend and wife. These early passages are handled well and feel authentic. At the midway point of the movie, the story shifts forward and Frank Grillo steps into the role of the middle-aged incarnation of the famous car-maker. Grillo is always good even when the projects he appears in are often beneath his talents. Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend is a nice, rare, dramatic role that allows the actor to play a normal person whose only skill is innovation and management of skilled laborers.
Tucker: A Man and His Dreams is a movie that I kept thinking about while viewing the Lamborghini film and there are similarities between the two. While I enjoyed seeing the beautiful and sleek designs of those old cars, the film doesn’t have much psychological insight into the reasons that caused Lamborghini to behave in his detached manner. And the animosity between the arrogant Enzo Ferrari and Lamborghini is never made to be very exciting or meaningful. I liked swaths of Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend but it’s a near miss. I can’t recommend the picture due to its surface-level examination of a very complex individual.
