Wildcats (1986) – Review

Where to watch Wildcats

Molly is a high school track coach who knows just as much about football as anyone else on the planet. When the football coach’s position becomes vacant, she applies for the job, despite expecting sniggers from fellow staff members and her former husband.

Goldie Hawn is so appealing that she almost makes Wildcats work with her charisma and comedic timing. However, the unfunny script by Ezra Sacks includes every cliche one would come to expect from an ‘underdog sports team’ movie, but forgets to include anything amusing outside of juvenile gags. Michael Ritchie, riding high off the success of Fletch, is left to flounder without good written material or a capable cast of comic actors to support the star.

Wildcats gets more outlandish, Hawn accompanies a teen on a burglary to get him back on the field, as it proceeds to its ‘big game’ conclusion. The movie has numerous montages in an attempt to liven up the dated story. Despite the appreciated efforts from Goldie to get a laugh, Wildcats never becomes anything more than a high-concept idea poorly executed.
