Where to watch The Freebie
3 Stars
Don’t be fooled by the title or the cover art, ‘The Freebie’ is not a raucous comedy. It’s a hard hitting intimate look at what an honest relationship is, and what it is not. The movie centers on a couple that believe they can fix their boring marriage by each having a one night stand. This would supposedly reignite their sex life. They are so open to each other they think the repercussions will be slim to none as they have already laid out rules to deal with their one night of debauchery. Unfortunately wanting to be honest and being honest are two completely different things, which the couple soon learns the hard way.
Masterfully directed by its star, Katie Aselton, the film includes some wonderful dialogue that captures not only the moment, but skillfully sets up future events in the plot. Dax Shepard blends well with Aselton on screen and together create one of the most real couples I’ve seen on screen. Aselton’s and Shepard’s performances carry the film throughout many one on one conversations and everything from their banter to eye direction add layers upon layers of insight into their characters and the scene.
This is a must see film for anyone interested in dialogue heavy scenes. Highly recommended for everyone else as well.
