As someone who freely admits to being fearful of roaming cattle on my jogs through the hills of California, After Earth taps into a certain primal fear of mine. The majority of the film tracks, young Jaden Smith through a series of encounters, escapes and near-death experiences with environmental predators. This is essentially a campfire tale, albeit one dressed up with a $135 million budget and given a snazzy sci-fi retrofit.

Will Smith is a such a likable actor and audiences have become so accustomed to seeing him portray cocky winners, that experience the continual hardships that await him in The Pursuit of Happyness is emotionally exhausting. Christopher Gardner is a medical supply salesman in San Francisco during the early 1980s. Saddled with outdated equipment and mounting bills, Chris lives sale-to-sale depending on his hard work ethic to make ends meet. His wife decides that she has had enough and packs her meager belongings, though it is never clearly stated, it seems that an addiction or mental instability may have been a deeper issue than finances. However this leaves Chris the sole provider for himself and his six-year-old son, who attends daycare in Chinatown and seems frighteningly adjusted for the trauma he endures.

This is my list of the top five best Alien Invasion movies. This has been an incredibly popular sub-genre dating back to the Orson Wells broadcast of 1938. Since 1977 there have been 35 Alien Invasion themed films released culminating in $4,171,019,251 at the global box-office. Many of the silver-screens biggest stars and directors have crafted or appeared in an Alien Invasion film at some point in their respective careers. The average Alien Invasion movie grosses $119,000.000 at the domestic box-office.

Following the smash hit The Sixth Sense and the under-performing follow-up Unbreakable, directing phenom M. Night Shyamalan returns to the summer box office landscape that served as the backdrop for his cinematic breakthrough. In Signs, another paranormal outing for the writer-director, Shyamalan explores the eerie implications of a 500-foot crop circle that mysteriously appears on the Bucks County, PA farm of reverend Graham Hess (Mel Gibson). As Hess and his family (Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Culkin, Abigail Breslin) try to take stock of what the sign means, and how its message incorporates into their faith, they start to get the feeling they are not alone in the fields behind their house.

Sounds like Whitemore’s alien fighting days aren’t over yet. As for Smith, I hope he returns, this is the movie that cemented him as a Hollywood star and proved that he could open big blockbusters. Earlier Fox pulled the 3D retrofit for Independence Day from its theatrical release schedule, something that happened with another Will Smith starrer I, Robot. We did at least get that as a 3D Blu-ray release, and I’m still hopeful that Independence Day still gets a 3D Blu-ray release, it’s one of the few 3D retrofits I was excited about, especially with the awesome July 4th slated release.
Anyone excited about the possibility of ID2?

The good news, the third film in the Men in Black franchise is a big improvement over the soft-boiled sequel. The bad news, the movie runs out of ideas early on then moves in fits and starts. MIB3 as it’s advertising campaign refers, is greatly benefited from the easy charisma of star Will Smith. His boundless energy and quick-witted line readings are just the shot of fun the film and audiences are looking for. After an extremely disjointed first act, the screenplay settles into a relaxed groove. The set-up this time, is that agent J (Smith) must travel back to 1969 to stop a disgusting creature from being jailed. It turns out the implications of the alien’s incarceration has dire affects on Agent K (Jones), and humanity at large. The time travel plot device is inserted to pair J with the 29 year old version of K (Josh Brolin).

M. Night Shyamalan and Will Smith have recently posted a few behind the scenes photos of their new collaboration, After Earth, on both Twitter and Facebook. The film also stars Smith’s son Jaden. The jungle location looks beautiful, but kind of strange for a post-apocalyptic film. The movie is kind of a reverse Lost in Space in which a family crash lands on Earth 1,000 years after humans have abandoned the planet. Apparently this is no WALL·E version of Earth though, wonder if the reason for humanity fleeing plays into the plot at all.
After Will’s character is captured, it’s up to son (played by his real life son Jaden) to rescue him. Sounds intriguing and could be fun, but if this has one of those Shyamalan twists at the end it’s a guaranteed dud. Luckily he didn’t write this, Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana) and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) are on the hook there. Is anyone still into this guy as a director after The Last Airbender or The Happening? Take a look at the pics below and let us know what you think.

Wesley Snipes seemed destined for super stardom in the early 1990s and yet it never happened. Sure he was in some big movies and gave great performances in others, but somehow it feels like he never truly achieved the status of international icon that he was most assuredly headed for. At the very least he paved the way for the likes of Will Smith. In 2004 Snipes began badmouthing Hollywood and (unsuccessfully) attempted to sue New Line Studio over the brouhaha known as Blade Trinity. The man was poison in the town.
