MacGruber (2010) – Review

Where to watch MacGruber

3 Stars

MacGruber is a feature length adaptation of the Saturday Night Live skit poking fun at MacGyver. Strange to think this could even have been a possibility as a feature, seeing as Anchorman 2 is so hard to get made. Even stranger is just how entertaining this flick is.

In order to fill an hour and a half of screen time the movie ingeniously expands from just MacGyver fun to all out 80s action flicks. Big explosions, lots of blood and ridiculous dialogue make MacGruber a real hoot to watch. Its R-rating is well earned, and had my jaw dropping at unexpected occasions. This is an adult film, leave the kiddies at home.

Will Forte is an underrated comedic actor, and this role proves it. Val Kilmer plays the straight man to Will Forte’s insanity as MacGruber’s arch-nemesis. If you’re looking to get into the mood of the 80s inspired films this summer (Karate Kid, The A-Team, The Expendables), MacGruber is a great way to kick it all off.

Director: Jorma Taccone

  1. I understand where you’re coming from, I am surprised by how much good press this film has gotten… I liked it, but it’s definitely not for everyone. Although your ticket price goes to MacGrubber, you don’t have to worry as it appears to be doing fairly poorly in its opening weekend.

  2. I sat in the movie convincing myself that the movie would get better… it did not. I walked out after about 15 minutes during the Kuntz conversation. Thanks goodness Robin Hood was running thru previews or my $20 (w/popcord and drink) would have been a complete waste. Saw Jimmy Fallon gushing over this movie last night. Jimmy Fallon is a shill for his SNL alumni. Movie Marvicks… lay down the crack pipe.
