Sony Eyes Assassin’s Creed 3D Film Rights

Sony Pictures, the studio behind the Spider-Man films, is hoping to acquire the rights to produce a new 3D film based on the popular video game Assassin’s Creed. Varity reports that negotiations between Sony and Ubisoft (the publisher/developer of the game) are nearing completion. Ubisoft has been shopping the project to studios over the past several months.

Sony apparently sees potential in converting popular video game franchises into blockbuster movies. The studio has already obtained the rights to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Sucker Punch’s InFamous series.

Ubisoft hopes all its popular titles can one day become popular films.

“As we’ve stated before, Ubisoft is actively looking for film opportunities for our top brands,” the Ubisoft spokeswoman said. “There is high interest from top Hollywood studios to collaborate on these brands.”

The Assassin’s Creed series which has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, takes place throughout various historical periods including the Renaissance and the Crusades. The series is usually recognized by its famous hooded hero pictured above.
