The Avengers (2012) Secret Villain Possibly Revealed

It seems like more and more toy companies are becoming a consistent source for spoilers, especially in comic book based films, and The Avengers is no different. Up to this point it was widely known that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki would take center stage as the villain in the upcoming superhero flick. Today, a description of the upcoming The Avengers Heroclix toy line was released by NECA and it contained some surprising information. The description offers a potentially huge spoiler regarding the identity of the up until now secret villain. Check out the description below.

WARNING DISCRIPTION CONTAINS POSSIBLE SPOILER!

Charging straight out of theaters and onto your tabletop, Marvel’s The Avengers Movie HeroClix set features heroes like Captain America and Thor as they battle the villainy of the Red Skull and Loki! Each Counter-Top display includes standard one-figure boosters as well as new three-figure “Team Packs”! Team Packs are designed with strong thematic undertones – play a Hydra force or defend freedom with a S.H.I.E.L.D. team pack!

That’s right, the Red Skull! Now, I know he is not new to the big screen but prior to this announcement there had been no mention of the Red Skull appearing in The Avengers. Granted the description of the toys could be incorrect, or possibly they included the Red Skull because of his appearance in last year’s Captain America: The First Avenger. However, if you compare the plot of the films it makes perfect sense.

It is already known that in the new Avengers film Loki will be looking to harness the powers of the Cosmic Cube, an object previously held by the Red Skull. At the end of Captain America: The First Avenger the Red Skull was sucked into an alternate dimension that looked very similar to those used in Thor. Loki also disappeared when he fell off of the transdimensional bridge in that film. So, it doesn’t seem too far off that the pair would somehow meet and come back to wreak havoc on the world.

So far this is only speculation, but expect to see plenty of updates regarding Marvel’s upcoming mega-superhero-summer-blockbuster in the future.
