After Lionsgate acquired Summit we all expected this. Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2‘s trailer will be featured on every single print of The Hunger Games. It’s a no brainer to try and syphon off some of the Twilight fans for Hunger Games, after all both are based on a series of books for young adults geared mainly toward the female persuasion (and yes, I’ve read The Hunger Games, and no, I haven’t read Twilight). Anchoring specific big movie trailers to a movie you’re trying to launch has been a big crowd draw in the past. Recently we saw this with the Dark Knight Rises prologue featured on true IMAX prints of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocal. The Star Wars trailers we’re also big draws helping to boost the box office for films they debuted on.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer had this to say to investors on a Q3 conference call this morning:
“
“We’re very excited about the opportunities created by our recent acquisition of Summit Entertainment. The February 11 home entertainment release of Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn 1, the March 23 theatrical release of The Hunger Games and the November 16 theatrical release of Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn 2 lead a strong combined slate that we believe will enable us to deliver increased consistency, profitability and value to our shareholders.”They went on to say that if Stephenie Meyer wanted to write more Twilight books they would support her fully (hint hint). Seeing as the franchise is at $2.5 billion worldwide with another film yet to open (it’ll end over $3 billion easy) it’s no wonder Lionsgate has been eager to find a way to keep the phenomenon alive.
Will you go see The Hunger Games based off this news? Or does it make a difference to you at all?
