Ernest Saves Christmas (1988) – Review

Where to watch Ernest Saves Christmas

3 Stars

Jim Varney’s alter-ego Ernest P. Worrell makes his second big-screen appearance in Ernest Saves Christmas. This is the highpoint of the Ernest series of movies. The likable Varney works hard for laughs, and unlike Pee-Wee Herman, Ernest is more amusing than annoying.

When St. Nick decides to retire he travels to Florida to find an apt replacement. Upon arriving in the sunshine state, he takes a taxi ride from the airport driven by Ernest P. Worrell. So when St. Nick leaves his magical sac in the trunk, it’s up to Ernest and a female teenager to save the holiday.

Ernest Saves Christmas doesn’t get the respect of other holiday-themed family comedies. It deserves to be included in the yearly rotation of yule-tide cinema classics. This is a warm-hearted, fun, and delightful movie.

Director: John R. Cherry III
