It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

Redbox Price Hike for Daily Rentals

Redbox announced today that it will be raising its daily rental price from $1 to $1.20 starting on October 31, 2011. To ease this transition they will discount the first day’s rate back to $1 until November 30, 2011 with additional day rentals being at the new $1.20 rate. Redbox is stating an increase in operating costs, mainly a debit card fee rise, is behind the price increase. This is the first time in eight years Redbox has raised their daily DVD rental price. Blu-ray and game rentals will stay the same at $1.50 and $2 respectively.

Netflix is no longer alone in rate hikes, although this will more than likely have zero effect on Redbox’s customer base. The day of the dollar DVD rental is over, rest in peace.

Warner to Pull Harry Potter From Store Shelves December 29, 2011

Warner Bros has decided to follow Disney’s example and put the Harry Potter series in the vault. I was wondering if they would try this as they had been feeling out ways to keep the franchise fresh after its final installment. This moratorium includes the soon to be released Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and Harry Potter: The Complete 8-Film Collection, out Nov 11, 2011. This should easily boost sales for all the Potter films as anxious parents attempt to complete the collection for their wizarding kids. My best guess is the next time you see these movies hitting store shelves again they will all have been retrofitted for the 3d illusion. As it stands now only the last two movies are in 3d, and only available as a Sony exclusive package for both Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2 to those buying a Sony 3d TV. So it makes sense Warner will continue down the line and use that to spur later sales as well. For those of you on the digital curve the franchise will continue to be available for digital download sell-through and Video On Demand. The series has earned over $12 billion including $7 billion from worldwide box office and $5 billion in home video, games and other. This should ensure that the last film, Deathly Hallows Part 2 will set records in DVD and Blu-ray sales. One thing’s for sure, after December 29th ebay and Amazon will light up with overly priced Harry Potter movies.

Netflix Scraps DVD by Mail Split to Qwikster

Netflix announced today that it will not be splitting off its DVD-by-mail service into a new site, Qwikster.com, instead it will stay at Netflix.com and allow members to continue using one website, one account and one password. After all the complaints I doubt they really had much of a choice, especially after losing customers with their pricing scheme changes, this would have ensured a further bleed from their subscriber base. I think there’s only one person who really hates this idea, the guy who has the Qwikster Twitter handle. Sorry pal, no payday for you.

Here’s the posting from Reed Hastings on the Netflix blog:

DVDs will be staying at netflix.com

It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.

This means no change: one website, one account, one password… in other words, no Qwikster.

While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.

We’re constantly improving our streaming selection. We’ve recently added hundreds of movies from Paramount, Sony, Universal, Fox, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, MGM and Miramax. Plus, in the last couple of weeks alone, we’ve added over 3,500 TV episodes from ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, USA, E!, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Discovery Channel, TLC, SyFy, A&E, History, and PBS.

We value our members, and we are committed to making Netflix the best place to get movies & TV shows.

Thank you.

-Reed

Dish Planning Blockbuster Streaming Alternative to Netflix

Dish Network is planning to release a Blockbuster online streaming program similar to Netflix’s next month according to Bloomberg. The timing on this was aligned to the raising and restructuring of prices on Netflix’s streaming and DVD rental plans.

Blockbuster already offers both purchase and rentals online in streaming fashion on its website. This will be its first subscription based streaming service. If not at point of launch, then at some point Dish will get this service on their boxes to push as an upgrade to their customers. After all that was the point to their purchase of the bankrupt video rental chain.

Starz is expected to be available from Blockbuster streaming, which is interesting news considering they just walked away from renewing their deal with Netflix streaming. This should make the Blockbuster service a bit more appealing, but won’t cause much switch over from Netflix until the Starz contract runs out at the end of February. I’m most interested in how much it will cost and will they include DVD rentals through the mail with this as Netflix originally did?

A Call for DVD Commentaries

While watching a DVD, I was inundated with several trailers, advertisements for movie products, and a commercial featuring Martin Scorsese for the Film Foundation. According to the Film Foundation, over half of the movies made before 1950 have been lost. To preserve movies for future generations, the Film Foundation has been working to save and restore aging films to their original condition. It was a nice commercial. I then moved on to the feature film.

A few days later, I read that the third incarnation of The Thing was finished. The story centers around a research team in Antarctica that discovers an alien spacecraft. By accident, the alien escapes and wreaks terror upon the scientists. John Carpenter released his version of The Thing in 1982, starring Kurt Russell in the lead role. It has since become a classic. Howard Hawks produced the original version in 1951 called The Thing from Another World. All of the movies are loosely based upon the short story “Who Goes There” by John W. Campbell, Jr.

The Howard Hawks’ version of The Thing is my favorite. Although made over half a century ago in living black and white, it still plays well. The production values of the film were top-notch for the day. Standing at an impressive 6’7″, James Arness was a natural to play the role of the monster.
