Clash Of The Titans (2010) – Review

By Trevor Anderson | Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

3 Stars
A decent remake and tons of action make this year’s sword and sandal flick very enjoyable. Although the 3d aspect doesn’t compare to ‘Avatar’, most movie-goers will opt to see it wearing glasses. If those lines are too long for you, don’t feel like you’re missing out if you see it in 2d, you’re not. The acting and dialogue aren’t the greatest, but this is an action flick first and foremost. And in keeping that in mind while entering the theater, you’ll find the film much more enjoyable. Neeson and Fiennes as the dueling gods Zeus and Hades – Continue reading…

The Karate Kid – Trailer

By Jason Rugaard | Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Young Jaden Smith has his first starring role in the new incarnation of the ‘Karate Kid’. This look like a very ‘loose remake’. A far younger protagonist then the original may help sell the film to children, a much less cynical audience than lover’s of the 1984 film. Jackie Chan is an ideal choice for a new age Mr. Miyagi. Columbia Pictures is spending a lot of money on the marketing campaign in the hopes of a possible franchise. Should be interesting to see how well the film does when it opens on June 11th opposite another 80’s relic ‘The – Continue reading…

Independence Day 2…on the way?

By Jason Rugaard | Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Now that Fox is rolling in the dough from Avatar’s $2.7 billion dollar worldwide gross, the execs are looking for their next big ‘tent-pole’ release. Today word began spreading that a possible follow up to 1996’s’ Independence Day’ is in the works. However it has been reported as recently as Monday that Will Smith is mulling over a return to the ‘Men in Black’ franchise. Perhaps Fox timed this to grab Smith when he’s ‘blockbuster’ –mode, coming off the critical and commercial disappointment of ‘Seven Pounds’. Director Roland Emmerich is tied up on another film at the moment, so – Continue reading…

I’m A Fan Of Wesley Snipes

By Jason Rugaard | Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Think back to the early 90’s for a moment. Schwarzenegger was still a ‘Terminator’, Michael Keaton was ‘Batman’ and Will Smith was only the ‘Fresh Prince’. This was a time when Wesley Snipes was an ‘A’-list action star and heavyweight dramatic leading man as well. For every ‘Passenger 57’, there was a ‘Jungle Fever‘, every ‘White Men Can’t Jump’, a ‘New Jack City’ or ‘Sugar Hill’. This was a man with the build of a boxer and athleticism of a gymnast, who was also a classically trained actor.
The last six years haven’t been kind to Snipes. His recent out-put of – Continue reading…

Interview: Uwe Boll

By Jason Rugaard | Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Uwe Boll is a well known and prolific movie director, writer and producer. Dr. Boll is best known for directing many feature films based on video games such as Alone In The Dark, BloodRayne, In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, Postal and Far Cry. He recently took a short break from his busy shooting schedule for the third film in the BloodRayne trilogy, Bloodrayne: The Third Reich, to speak with Movie Mavericks’ Jason Rugaard.
JASON: What films have inspired you?
UWE BOLL: I would have to say ‘Mutiny of the Bounty’; the 1948 Howard Hawks film ‘Red River’, – Continue reading…

How To Train Your Dragon (2010) – Review

By Trevor Anderson | Monday, March 29th, 2010

3 Stars
In classic animated story form, this is another movie that tells the tale of how a young kid can rise up and save the day. The main character, Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel), embodies everything that makes a whimpy nerd, well a whimpy nerd. The adults are so set in their ways when it comes to handling dragons. None of them have stopped to see if there is another way of dealing with them. Along comes Hiccup with an alternative point of view that only a kid could possess. And by doing so shows the adults how kindness – Continue reading…

Did You Hear About The Morgans? (2009) – Review

By Trevor Anderson | Monday, March 29th, 2010

1 1/2 Stars
Unfortunately I heard about the Morgans. They got into some trouble and had to go into witness protection in the middle of no where. How can these city slickers survive in Hicksville USA? The same way I suggest the audience survive – curl up in the fetal position and cover your face. The best thing about this movie are the co-stars Sam Elliott and Mary Steenburgen. Both leads, Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker, are horrendous. Grant ups his mumbly dialogue delivery by a thousand times. His lines tend to start and stop and start and stop – Continue reading…

Prince Of Hitsville (2009/Short) – Review

By Trevor Anderson | Monday, March 29th, 2010

2 1/2 Stars
Prince of Hitsville is the story of events leading up to Marvin Gaye making one of the greatest albums ever. Being a short film (38mins) it doesn’t have time to cover all of Gaye’s life, instead it smartly opts to show a small but important part of it. Drama ensues as Gaye fights with the music studio to put out his political album. Throughout all of this he must deal with his brother coming home from Vietnam and over-dosing on drugs. But all of this only makes Marvin stronger and more diligent in getting his new album – Continue reading…

Chris Evans Is Captain America – News

By Trevor Anderson | Sunday, March 28th, 2010

No wonder that Marvel has finally decided on Chris Evans as the lead for The First Avenger: Captain America. Having filled the shoes of Johnny Storm for Marvel in the Fantastic Four franchise, he was a shoe in to beat out other big names such as John Krasinski, Channing Tatum and Ryan Phillippe. Personally I find Chris Evans to be quite good, proven in his roles in Push and Not Another Teen Movie. He appears to be a low rent Ryan Reynolds on the surface, but I think comic book fan boys and general audiences alike will be pleased with – Continue reading…

I’m A Fan Of NBC’s Chuck

By Trevor Anderson | Sunday, March 28th, 2010

What could be better than a funny version of Alias? NBC’s Chuck has somehow managed to recreate the fun spy games of J.J. Abrams’ hit show, whilst keeping the dramatic scenes intact. These universes literally parallel one another on many levels. After The O.C. it’s nice to see Josh Schwartz shine again with Chuck. Especially since his other hit show is now Gossip Girl.
Zachary Levi is both humorous and endearing in the lead role. Yvonne Strahovski adds drama as Chuck’s sexy love interest. She might seem like a nice girl, but is capable of turning on a dime and striking – Continue reading…

I’m A Fan Of Composer Marco Beltrami

By Trevor Anderson | Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Marco Beltrami has done a lot of scores for films. A lot more than you think. If you went to the theaters in the last five years, chances are you’ve heard his music. Guillermo Del Toro seems to swear by him, having used his talents in Mimic, Blade II and Hellboy. There is debate as to whether his scores are bland. I challenge anyone to listen to I, Robot, Joy Ride or 3:10 To Yuma and say that. People wonder how this guy can continue working in films, but it’s obvious that he has won over several directors including Len – Continue reading…

DIY Film Distribution: How Albert Pyun Is Ditching The Studios

By Trevor Anderson | Saturday, March 27th, 2010

- A Man And His Camera -
In the early 90s indie films were all the rage. The idea of anyone being able to pick up a cheap video camera and make a movie fluttered through the heads of many. In fact some speculated that this could bring the studios down a peg and create a new film market. Twenty years later that has yet to be seen. Sure there have been huge success stories like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. Heck even 28 Days Later proved that making a movie with video and having it look professional was – Continue reading…
