No Strings Attached (2011) – Review

June 20, 2011 in Comedy, Reviews

1 1/2 Stars

The latest from heralded veteran director Ivan Reitman is a misguided so-called romantic comedy (term used loosely here), featuring two leads will very little chemistry. Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman are Adam and Emma friends who believe they can maintain a strictly physical relationship without emotional attachments. Of course one becomes enamored with the other and wants more while the partner pulls away only to come to their senses in a soppy final scene. The only novel twist in the entire script is that Emma is the one who is constantly talking Adam out of a relationship. Usually in stereotypical Hollywood writing it’s the female that longs for the security of partnership so credit must be given for at least mixing things up. Unfortunately every other aspect of the story is trite. Most developments are so telegraphed that set-ups established early on have no real payoff on an emotional or comedic level.

A group of misfits and freaks lead by Vince Vaughn enter a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament in order to save their cherished local gym from the onslaught of a corporate health fitness chain. The thin premise is highlighted by a hysterical performance from Ben Stiller as a egomaniacal feather haired health freak. His character is solely responsible for some of the film’s biggest laughs. A slew of celebrity cameos are littered throughout and each is surprisingly well used notably David Hasselhoff as the coach of the German team.

Beautiful Girls (1996) – Review

Ted Demme’s Beautiful Girls is a masterpiece pure and simple. The screenplay written by Scott Rosenberg is full of so many authentic moments it feels like our lives and friends have been observed for material. The story takes place in an unidentified town on the East Coast. Will (Hutton) has come home from NY to attend his ten year reunion and check in with the group of friends that he abandoned when he left to purse a career in music. His crew is made up of character actors Noah Emmerich, Michael Rapport, Max Perlich and Matt Dillon, it’s an absolute credit to the casting decisions made by Demme that the chemistry works so well within the group. Each supports the other in obscure ways and every individual gets a moment to deliver extended monologues.

Men In Black II (2002) – Review

This blockbuster sized sequel is a slickly designed package lacking the freshness of the first film, but still qualifies as superior entertainment. Will Smith again stars as Agent Jay, the former NYPD cop turned secret alien police enforcer. This time out Jay must enlist the help of Frank the talking pug, a group of French accented worms and his retired partner Agent Kay. Their assignment to stop a renegade alien (posing as a lingerie model) from discovering a hidden life-force on Earth. The plot details aren’t why moviegoers flock to the ‘MIB’ movies, it’s the chemistry between Smith (has there ever been an actor so comfortable in effects sequences?) and Jones. That on-screen pairing is again firing on all cylinders in this follow-up. Jones’s flat, world-weary delivery is the perfect foil to Smith’s hyperactive antics.

Men In Black (1997) – Review

This blockbuster from summer 1997 is a fresh and very funny sci-fi comedy with some truly groundbreaking (for its time) special effects. Director Barry Sonnenfeld and stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones working from a lively script by Ed Solomon have created an infectiously joyful film full of wonderful moments. The Men in Black or ‘MIB’ of the title are a secret organization that monitors all alien activity on Earth. Smith is an NYPD officer who’s recruited by Jones to be his eventual replacement. The story centers on the partnership of these two very different ‘cops’ and their pursuit of a giant cockroach inhabiting a human body.

The Hangover Part II (2011) – Review

This follow-up to the blockbuster comedy from 2009 is a bizarre and desperate rehash of the original with very little to offer other than some moderately amusing bits. Director Todd Phillips is a gifted comedic director but here he and co-writers Craig Mazin and Scot Armstrong confuse ‘gross’ with ‘funny’. The screenplay is a beat for beat copy with none of the fun or freshness that made the first film so appealing. This time around Stu (Helms) is getting hitched in Thailand but not before the wolf pack have one last night to remember (or forget). Upon waking in a steamy Bangkok hotel room the three best friends (Cooper, Galifianakis, and Helms) set out on the city to retrieve Stu’s missing teenage brother-in-law. Partly aided in their journey by the chaos minded Mr. Chow (Ken Joeng) and a smoking monkey the trio come across all sorts of unsavory characters in piecing the night together and finding the boy.

#1 Cheerleader Camp (2010) – Review

#1 Cheerleader Camp is an un-rated raunchy sex comedy from The Asylum that holds its own amongst other straight to video teen-targeted comedies such as the American Pie series. Naomi L. Selfman’s script is the best coming out of The Asylum in a long while, providing laughs from jokes that have been set-up well before the current scene’s punchline. They’ve benefited from a decent line of sex comedies in the past, mostly credited to Ms. Selfman’s scripts, but here director Mark Quod and crew pull off a sleekly shot little comedy with little to no fat on it. Red, or retired and extremely dangerous, is not the geezer pleaser it looks to be. In fact, with all the comedy, explosions and action I’d say it’s fun for all ages. Bruce Willis plays a retired CIA operative, who along with fellow retiree’s Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren, are being hunted down to cover up a past mission. Mary-Louise Parker is Willis’ “girlfriend” who he takes captive in order to protect her life. Read the rest of this entry →

‘Just Friends’ is a funny sweet-natured comedy starring a cast of low level comedians that work hard to create an infectiously humorous experience. Ryan Reynolds is cast as Chris Brander a once chubby outcast in love with his female best friend. Now years later Chris is a newly slimmed financially successful talent manager. ‘Your Highness’ is an unfunny mess that seems content to flounder in a sea of mediocrity for the majority of it’s bloated running-time. Unless Minotaur penises and vague 1980′s fantasy film references are your thing, this insipid adventure/comedy is the weakest most offbeat big name misfire since ‘Little Nicky’. It wouldn’t be so insulting if it hadn’t been the product of some many talented individuals both in front of and behind the camera. Director David Gordon Green teamed with McBride and Franco on the incomparably better ‘Pineapple Express’. Pick any sequence with either of those two from that earlier film and it will be funnier than anything in ‘Your Highness’.

The Farrelly Brothers remake of the 1972 film ‘The Heartbreak Kid’ is a hilarious and endearing film from the modern-day kings of ‘gross-out’ gags. Staying true to form the Farrelly’s have delivered another in a long line of comedies bordering on crudeness and sentimentality sometimes within the same scene. ‘Something About Mary’ star Ben Stiller has found a way to make an unappealing character sympathetic and often very amusing.

A colorful live-action/ CGI hybrid in the mold of the ‘Alvin’ films of recent years. This strangely off-beat children’s tale is a film of immense technical wizardry and moderate pleasures. Russell Brand makes for a surprisingly appealing voice-actor. Mouthing the lines of the lead character appropriately named ‘E.B.’, teenage son of the Easter Bunny. Dad wants E.B. to take over the family business; supplying candy to children on Easter. However E.B has big musical aspirations and heads to Hollywood looking to fulfill his dreams of becoming a professional drummer. Arthur (2011) – Review

This faithful remake of the 1981 Dudley Moore film is a showcase for the talents of comedian Russell Brand, and not much else. Helen Mirren tackles the role that garnered actor John Gielgud an OSCAR three decades ago. Her screen chemistry with the always inebriated Lothario, played with wit and sincerity by Brand, is the heart of the film. Yes, this is a love story but not a romantic comedy as the ads have suggested. Director Jason Winer has to be blamed for the lack of chuckles and energy in this visually bland and very unmemorable comedy. Too many scenes play out longer than necessary, and the entire film is audibly quite in an unsettling and vacant manner.

Don’t be fooled by the title or the cover art, ‘The Freebie’ is not a raucous comedy. It’s a hard hitting intimate look at what an honest relationship is, and what it is not. The movie centers on a couple that believe they can fix their boring marriage by each having a one night stand. This would supposedly reignite their sex life. They are so open to each other they think the repercussions will be slim to none as they have already laid out rules to deal with their one night of debauchery. Unfortunately wanting to be honest and being honest are two completely different things, which the couple soon learns the hard way. Read the rest of this entry →

The Game Plan (2007) – Review

February 23, 2011 in Comedy, Family, Reviews

submit to reddit

1 1/2 Stars

Despite the efforts and charm of Dwayne Johnson this Walt Disney production is lackluster in every way. An unoriginal premise is recycled yet again resulting in a laugh less affair, which should amuse 10 year olds and not many others. Joe Kingman (Johnson) is the star quarterback for the Boston Rebels and the town’s most eligible bachelor. That’s until the appearance of a little girl claiming to be his daughter from a long forgotten relationship puts Joe’s life style and personal identity in jeopardy. The moronic screenplay is littered with cliches and cartoon-ish characters, (specifically, the teammates). Add to this one of the most obnoxious performances from a child actor in recent memory and you have a harmless but uninvolved film about a jerk whose child is even more abrasive.

Martin Lawrence returns for his third outing in the ‘Big Mama’ franchise, this time with the help of young comedian Brandon T. Jackson. To say this is an unnecessary sequel is an understatement, stretching a premise that was worn out after the first entry. This latest installment is by far the weakest of the series. Jackson joins the cast as Trent, Malcom’s teenage stepson who witnesses a murder forcing the pair to go on the lame at an all girls academy. Two good comedians are wasted on a ridiculous script, the premise is tired and recycled from countless other films and sitcoms. Read the rest of this entry →

Sandler’s latest picture should prove to be another box-office bonanza, cementing his legacy as one of the most consistently bankable screen comedians of all time. It was 13 years ago that Sandler broke out in his first hit ‘The Wedding Singer‘, in that time he has headlined 11 films that have crossed the $100million dollar mark domestically. Ron Howard’s first foray into the ‘comedy’ genera since 1989′s ‘Parenthood’ is a mixed bag. Tonal shifts from slapstick to black comedy keep this often funny and very watch-able film from being a home-run. Vince Vaughn is appealing in a relaxed performance as the man burdened with the knowledge of his best friend’s wife’s ongoing affair. What’s a guy to do? Lets be clear from the start this isn’t the worst film starring a real life couple, that would be 1991′s ‘The Marrying Man‘ a dreadful so-called comedy featuring Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. Lemuel Gulliver is a lowly mail room clerk until he gets an assignment from the girl of his dreams (Amanda Peet in a criminally underwritten role), to file a report from Bermuda. This leads to an impressive CGI sequence in which, Gulliver’s boat is propelled into a storm that sends him to the uncharted island of Lilliput. This dirty, mean spirited sequel to the monstrously successful ‘Fockers’ franchise should put an end to the series. Ben Stiller is once again joined by regulars Robert DeNiro, Owen Wilson and Terri Pollo, none of whom are actually required to put on a performance. The tired screenplay credited to two writers has Stiller jumping through hoops in the hopes that he will be appointed head of the family. Of course Jack Byrnes (DeNiro) still has his eyes on Gaylord Focker (Stiller) even after years of wedded bliss to his daughter and a growing grandchild. The new Will Ferrell action-comedy runs for 107 minutes. If only director Adam Mckay had trimmed this down to 90minutes, leaving out the excessive and uninteresting action finale. Even at its current length, this is the funnest comedy of summer 2010. Pudgy wimp Ferrell is the paper pushing desk jockey that craves order and civility, that shys away from danger and violence. A spot-on satire of the ‘blaxploitaion’ films of the 1970′s. The genre’s strengths and shortcomings are lovingly recreated by director Scott Sanders; Michael Jai White embodies the title character ‘Dynamite’. A loose cannon seeking revenge for the murder of his kid brother. As he works his way through the criminal underworld, our hero stumbles upon a conspiracy to shrink the genitals of all black men. Adam Sandler and his friends are back in this lightweight mid-summer comedy about five infantile men in their 40s who reunite for the funeral of their childhood basketball coach. A handful of fitfully funny scenes are buried in the films 100 minute running time. Outside of a couple of ‘gross-out’ gags, the film is relatively tame in comparison to most Sandler vehicles. An intriguing premise is wasted in this misguided blockbuster. An excellent first act gives way to an overly self-important second act that rings false. Jason Bateman is an unsuccessful P.R. man, whom sells Smith on the idea that; while incarcerated the public will realize they need a savior. So far so good.
